George Turner (footballer, Born 1887)
George Turner (1887–1958) was an English association football, footballer who played for Stoke City F.C., Stoke from 1908 to 1915. He was born in Stoke-upon-Trent. Career Turner joined Stoke at a time when it seemed that football in Stoke-on-Trent was coming to an end with both professional clubs, Stoke City F.C., Stoke and Port Vale F.C., Port Vale both suffering financial meltdown and resignation from the Football League. Stoke's problem had been a disaster waiting to happen after a number of years of financial mismanagement and in 1907–08 Stoke F.C. season, 1907–08 season the club had lost the backing from their supporters who boycotted attending matches at the Victoria Ground. Chairman William Cowlishaw tried in vain to rally support and after admitting to failure he pulled Stoke out of the league and into liquidation. Sir George Wilfred Turner, KCB, KBE (22 January 1896 – 10 May 1974) was a British civil servant. Born on 22 January 1896, Turner attended Rotherham Grammar School before entering HM Civil Service as a boy clerk in the War Office in 1911; this was the lowest grade in the clerical class. George Turner (architect)
George Palmer Turner (November 8, 1896 – November 13, 1984) was an American architect principally known for his residential designs in Birmingham, Alabama. From the 1920s through the 1950s, he "designed scores of dwellings throughout Birmingham in the Spanish and Mediterranean Revival Styles, including a number of churches." A number of his works are listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. A native of Alabama, he studied architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and in France before returning to his home state. At the time of the 1930 United States Census, Turner was living in Birmingham, Alabama with his wife Dorothy Hays Turner (1896-1982) and their children Dorothy and George. Turner died in 1984 and is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in Birmingham. George Grey Turner
George Grey Turner (8 September 1877 – 24 August 1951) was an English surgeon. He was born in North Shields and received his medical degree from Newcastle Medical School (then a part of the University of Durham). He received a Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 1903 and joined the staff of the Royal Infirmary. He served with the Royal Army Medical Corps in the First World War. As a young surgeon, he travelled around the world, being received by the Pope, Benito Mussolini, the King of Italy and King Alfonso of Spain. In 1927 he was made Professor of Surgery in the University of Durham. In 1934 he was elected President of the Medical Society of London and in 1935 delivered the Bradshaw Lecture at the Royal College of Surgeons. After the war, Grey Turner was briefly famous for performing one of the earliest operations to attempt the removal of a bullet from a soldier's heart. George Turner (died 1610) was an English physician in London. He is known for his interest in alchemy and friendship with Simon Forman. His wife was the convicted murderer Anne Turner. Life Born either in Derbyshire or in Suffolk, he has been identified as the George Turner who entered St. John's College, Cambridge as a sizar in November 1569. This George Turner became a Beresford scholar of the college on 9 November 1570, and graduated B.A. in 1573, M.A. in 1576. He took the degree of M.D. abroad. Turner became a candidate at the College of Physicians of London on 4 September 1584. He was elected a fellow there on 29 February 1588, and was censor in 1591, 1592, 1597, 1606, and 1607. He attained a good medical practice, and Queen Elizabeth favoured him. Turner was a friend of Dr. Simon Forman, and had at least a literary interest in alchemy. George Reginald Turner (8 October 1916 – 8 June 1997) was an Australian writer and critic, best known for the science fiction novels written in the later part of his career. His first science fiction story and novel appeared in 1978, when he was in his early sixties. By this point, however, he had already achieved success as a mainstream novelist, including a Miles Franklin Award, and as a literary critic. Biography Turner was born in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, and educated in Melbourne. He served in the Australian Imperial Forces during the Second World War. George Turner (artist)
George Turner (2 April 1841 – 29 March 1910) was an English landscape artist and farmer who has been called "Derbyshire's John Constable". Life and work Turner was born in Cromford, Derbyshire in England, but then moved to Derby with his family. He showed an early talent for music and art - encouraged by his father Thomas Turner, who although a tailor by profession was also an art enthusiast. Turner was largely self-taught and went on to become a professional painter and art teacher. Turner lived in Derbyshire all his life. In 1865 he married Eliza Lakin (1837 - 1900), becoming a part-time farmer and raising four children at Walnut farm in Barrow upon Trent. He had a number of successful students including David Payne and Louis Bosworth Hurt. After Eliza's death in 1900, he moved to Kirk Ireton and later married fellow artist Kate Stevens Smith (1871-1964) - they set up home in Idridgehay where he died in 1910.
