George Town – Bayan Lepas LRT Line
The Bayan Lepas LRT line is a proposed light rapid transit (LRT) line in the Malaysian state of Penang. Conceived by the Penang state government in the 2000s as part of the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP), the proposed line within the city of George Town was envisioned to link the city centre with the industrial town of Bayan Lepas to the south. Nineteen stations are expected to be built along the stretch. Eight additional stations will also be built on three islets that will be reclaimed off the southern coastline of Penang Island, bringing the overall length of the planned route to . In 2015, the construction of the LRT line was announced to begin in 2018. That did not happen. Construction was then expected to start in 2020, and that did not happen again. A medium-capacity system (MCS), also known as light rapid transit or light metro, is a rail transport system with a capacity greater than light rail, but less than typical heavy-rail rapid transit. MCS’s trains are usually 1-4 cars, or 1 light rail vehicle (LRV). Most medium-capacity rail systems are automated or use light rail type vehicles. Light rail is considered high capacity as trains use 2-4 LRVs. Since ridership determines the scale of a rapid transit system, statistical modeling allows planners to size the rail system for the needs of the area. Tanjung Bungah (also spelt as ''Tanjong Bungah'') is a suburb of George Town in Penang, Malaysia. It is located along the northern coast of Penang Island between Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Tokong, and about northwest of the city centre. Tanjung Bungah is well known as a beach destination, with several hotels and resorts lining the beaches within the area. The Land Public Transport Commission ( Malay: ''Suruhanjaya Pengangkutan Awam Darat''), Abbr.: SPAD, was a Malaysian statutory body set up to plan for, regulate and enforce rules concerning land-based public and freight transport in Malaysia from 2010 to 2018.
