George Thornton (politician)
George Thornton (23 December 1819 – 23 November 1901) was an Australian merchant and politician, serving as a Sydney Municipal Council Alderman, Mayor of Sydney and member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council. Thornton was born in Sydney, the son of Samuel Thornton (son of another Samuel, a woollen manufacturer of Barnsley, Yorkshire) and Sarah (née Madden). Sarah was transported to Australia as a punishment for larceny; Samuel followed, arriving in Sydney in 1814 as a free settler, and was granted land by the colonial government. George Thornton was educated at the Australian College on Jamieson Street, Sydney; he went into work as a custom-house and ship agent, later becoming an import merchant. Having been a magistrate in Sydney for many years, Thornton served also as a director of various financial institutions such as the City Bank Of Sydney. George Thornton (cricketer)
George Thornton (24 December 1867 – 31 January 1939) was an English amateur first-class cricketer, who played County Championship cricket for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in three matches in 1891, and later that decade for Middlesex, and later appeared in a Test match representing South Africa in 1902. Life and career Thornton was born in Skipton, Yorkshire, England. He was educated at Skipton Grammar School, and the University of Edinburgh, where he studied medicine. Thornton occasionally played for Yorkshire and Middlesex before going to South Africa when the South African Wars broke out. Thornton was one of the first to volunteer, and was appointed head of the Government Hospital in Pretoria. Thornton spent nine years in South Africa and, during his stay, he played cricket for Transvaal, and for South Africa at the Old Wanderers, Johannesburg. George Thornton (American Football)
George Renardo Thornton (born April 27, 1968) is a former American football defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL). He was selected by the San Diego Chargers in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft. He played three years for the Chargers and New York Giants. On October 14, 1993 he suffered a minor stroke which ended his career. Thornton attended Jeff Davis High School in Montgomery, Alabama. At the Alabama Crimson Tide football, University of Alabama, he was an All-Southeastern Conference, SEC defensive end in 1990. He is married to Tawanna and they have a son, George Jr. and a daughter, Georvauna Tene' (deceased). References
