George Taylor (Alamo Defender)
The Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was a crucial conflict of the Texas Revolution. In 1835, colonists from the United States joined with Tejanos (Mexicans born in Texas) in putting up armed resistance to the centralization of the Mexican government. President Antonio López de Santa Anna and the government in Mexico City believed the United States had instigated the insurrection with a goal of annexing Texas. In an effort to tamp down on the unrest, martial law was declared and military governor General Martín Perfecto de Cos established headquarters in San Antonio de Béxar, stationing his troops at the Alamo. When the Texian volunteer soldiers gained control of the fortress at the Siege of Béxar, compelling Cos to surrender on December 9, many saw his expulsion to the other side of the Rio Grande as the end of Mexican forces in Texas. George William Taylor
George William Taylor, (born November 5, 1937) is a former politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1977 to 1985, and was a cabinet minister in the government of William Davis. Taylor was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party. Background Taylor was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and educated at McMaster University (received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960) and the Osgoode Hall Law School. He practiced as a lawyer in Barrie, taught business law at Georgian College for ten years, and was named a Queen's Counsel in 1977. As of 2005, he is director of the United Appeal in Barrie, director of the Barrie YM-YWCA and campaign chairman for the Canadian Cancer Society. He also plays with the Barrie Oldtimers Hockey Team. George Taylor (cricketer)
George Rammell Taylor (born 25 November 1909 — 21 October 1986) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Hampshire. Taylor was born at Havant in November 1909. He was educated at Lancing College, where he played for the college cricket team. Taylor was a right-handed batsman who usually batted in the lower order in first-class cricket and a slow right-arm occasional bowler. He made a single appearance for Hampshire during the 1935 County Championship, scoring 0 and 21 in a home match against Lancashire. In the 1939 season with no other amateur available for more than a few matches, Taylor captained Hampshire, though he did not appear in the final few matches of the season when Giles Baring was available to play and was worth a place in the team on merit. The move to appoint Taylor as captain was not a success, and the team won only two out of 23 matches under his captaincy. George J. Taylor (November 22, 1853 – October 28, 1911 in New York City) was the city editor of James Gordon Bennett's ''New York Herald''. He noticed that his readers had a craving for baseball news. Together with Charles Byrne and Joseph Doyle they decided to form a team in Brooklyn to compete in the new Inter-State Association of Professional Baseball Clubs. They convinced casino operator Ferdinand Abell to put up the cash and got the team off the ground. The group also oversaw the construction of the team's first ballpark at Washington Park. Managed by Doyle and Byrne that first season, the team won the Interstate League title.
