George Sturt
George Sturt (18 June 1863–4 February 1927), who also wrote under the pseudonym George Bourne, was an English writer on rural crafts and affairs. He was born and grew up in Farnham, Surrey, the son of Ellen née Smith (1829–1890) and Francis Sturt (1822–1884). He attended Farnham Grammar School and for a short period aged 15 years he was a pupil-teacher there, at one time having the ambition to be a sub-inspector of local schools. When his father died in 1884 he took over the administration of the family wheelwright business founded in 1706. During this time he also contributed as an assistant to the various craftsmen working in the business. Farnham
Farnham ( /ˈfɑːnəm/) is a market town and civil parish in Surrey, England, around southwest of London. It is in the Borough of Waverley, close to the county border with Hampshire. The town is on the north branch of the River Wey, a tributary of the Thames, and is at the western end of the North Downs. The civil parish, which includes the villages of Badshot Lea, Hale and Wrecclesham, covers and had a population of 39,488 in 2011. Among the prehistoric artefacts from the area is a woolly mammoth tusk, excavated in Badshot Lea at the start of the 21st century. The earliest evidence of human activity is from the Neolithic and, during the Roman period, tile making took place close to the town centre. The name "Farnham" is of Saxon origin and is generally agreed to mean "meadow where ferns grow". Green Lane Cemetery, Farnham
Green Lane Cemetery is a small cemetery on Green Lane in Farnham in Surrey, one of four cemeteries owned and maintained by Farnham Town Council. The Chapel and Cemetery were opened in 1914 and are on a hill which commands views across to the West of Farnham and Farnham Castle. The Chapel could seat up to 80 people but had little use in recent years and was sold by Farnham Town Council for use as a Meeting House for the Plymouth Brethren. The cemetery is divided into six sections allowing for the burial of different denominations; there is a small children's area and an area dedicated to the interment of cremated remains. The cemetery has 13 military burials, two from World War I and eleven from World War II, the latter including two pilots - P/O Evelyn Creen Stuart Wilson-Steele of 219 Squadron (killed 1942) and Sgt Michael Henry John Kilburn. The Harry Ransom Center (until 1983 the Humanities Research Center) is an archive, library and museum at the University of Texas at Austin, specializing in the collection of literary and cultural artifacts from the Americas and Europe for the purpose of advancing the study of the arts and humanities.
