George Stacey (footballer)
George William Stacey (April 1881 – 1972) was an English footballer who played at left back for several English football clubs, including Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley and Manchester United. Born in Thorpe Hesley, Rotherham, Stacey began his career with Thorpe Hesley F.C. before signing for Sheffield Wednesday in May 1902. He then joined Barnsley in August 1905, via a short spell with Thornhill United. In April 1907, he was sold to Manchester United for a fee of £200. Stacey made his Manchester United debut on 12 October 1907, playing at left back in a 6–1 away win over Newcastle United. That season, he made 18 league appearances and scored one goal as United won the First Division title by nine points over Aston Villa - the first major trophy in Manchester United's history. Thorpe Hesley
Thorpe Hesley is a village in the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, England, lying east of the M1 motorway at junction 35. The village has been included within the boundaries of Rotherham town since 1894, having previously been divided between the townships of Kimberworth and Wentworth. Historically the village was known for coal mining and nail making. It has an Anglican church, Holy Trinity, built in 1839 chiefly at the cost of Earl Fitzwilliam and the Earl of Effingham. There is no post office, one petrol station and four public houses. At the 2011 Census, it had a population of 4,427. Claim to fame John Wesley spent some time in the village where he preached. He lodged at Barley Hall (now demolished). In 1975, there was filming in the village for the Walt Disney film ''Escape from the Dark''. George Hunter (footballer Born 1885)
George Charles Hunter (2 June 1885 – 20 January 1934) was an English professional footballer who played as a half back in the Football League for Aston Villa, Oldham Athletic, Chelsea and Manchester United. Career Born in Nowshera, British India, Hunter played for Aston Villa, Oldham Athletic and Chelsea during his early career. In March 1914, he was sold to Manchester United. He captained the club during the 1914–15 season and stayed with United until January 1915, when his contract was cancelled due to a training ground incident. He played for Croydon Common, Southampton, Brentford and Birmingham as a guest player during the First World War and finished his career with Portsmouth of the Southern League during the 1919–20 season. Charlie Roberts
Charles Roberts (6 April 1883 – 7 August 1939) was an English professional footballer who played as a centre-half in the Football League for Grimsby Town, Manchester United and Oldham Athletic. He spent nine years at United, where he was captain, helping the club to two First Division titles and an FA Cup. He won three caps for England in 1905. Playing career Born in Darlington, Roberts started his football career with Bishop Auckland, but soon moved to Grimsby Town. In 1904, he was transferred to Manchester United for £600. The Football Association Challenge Cup, more commonly known as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. Rotherham () is a large minster and market town in South Yorkshire, England. The town takes its name from the River Rother which then merges with the River Don. The River Don then flows through the town centre. It is the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham.
