George Smith (28 September 1782 – 5 January 1869) was an English architect and surveyor of the early 19th century, with strong connections with central and south-east London. Life and work Smith was born on 28 September 1783 at Aldenham in Hertfordshire. George Smith (Scottish Artist)
George Smith RSA (1870-1934) was a Scottish artist specialising in landscapes and animals, with an emphasis on horses at work. Life He was born on 2 February 1870 in Mid Calder in West Lothian, just west of Edinburgh. He was educated at George Watsons College then studied art at the Board of Manufacturers in Edinburgh and then in Antwerp under Verlat. In the late 19th century he shared a studio with friend and fellow artist James Christie Prowett (1865-1946) at Beaton’s Mill in Bannockburn near Stirling. Prowett specialised in landscapes. Smith exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and Royal Scottish Academy. In later life he lived at 47 Lauder Road in the Grange area of Edinburgh. George Curtis Smith (August 8, 1935 – April 15, 2020) was a senior United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio. Education and career Born in Columbus, Ohio, Smith received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio State University in 1957 and a Juris Doctor from Ohio State University College of Law in 1959. He was an assistant city attorney of Columbus from 1959 to 1962, and then an executive assistant to Mayor Ralston Westlake of Columbus from 1962 to 1964. He was an assistant attorney general of Ohio in 1964. He was a chief counsel to the prosecuting attorney of Franklin County from 1965 to 1970, and was himself the prosecuting attorney of that county from 1971 to 1980. He was a judge on the Franklin County Municipal Court from 1980 to 1985, and on the Franklin County Common Pleas Court from 1985 to 1987. George Bundy Smith
George Bundy Smith (April 7, 1937 – August 5, 2017) was a lawyer and judge in New York State. While he was a law student at Yale University, he participated in the Freedom Ride from Atlanta, Georgia, to Montgomery, Alabama. Early life Smith was born in New Orleans in 1937. He grew up in Washington, D.C. and attended Phillips Academy, where he was the only African-American in the Class of 1955. He received an A.B. degree from Yale University in 1959 and an LL.B. from Yale Law School in 1962. In addition, he earned his doctorate from NYU in Political Science. In 1961, William Sloane Coffin invited second-year law student Smith to go to Montgomery, Alabama as a Freedom Rider. He and ten other Freedom Riders were arrested in the Montgomery bus station in May 1961 and convicted of breach of the peace; their convictions were later reversed by the United States Supreme Court. George Smith (executioner)
George Smith (1805–1874), popularly known as Throttler Smith, was an English hangman from 1840 until 1872. He was born in Rowley Regis in the English West Midlands, where he performed the majority of his executions. Although from a good family he became involved with gangs and petty crime in his early life, and was imprisoned in Stafford Gaol on several occasions for theft. Career as a hangman, 1840–1872 Smith learned his trade as an assistant to William Calcraft. His first engagement as Calcraft's assistant was the public execution of James Owen and George Thomas outside Stafford Gaol. Smith was a prisoner at Stafford at the time of Owen and Thomas' execution, and Calcraft appointed Smith for the task because his regular assistant had turned up drunk. Dodd is a small fell in the Lake District, Cumbria, England, four kilometres north-west of Keswick, Cumbria, Keswick. It forms part of the Skiddaw range in the Northern Fells, northern part of the national park and the slopes are heavily wooded. Forestry Dodd lies on Forestry England land known as Dodd Wood; for many years it was extensively planted with Pinophyta, conifers right up to the summit which obstructed the view. However, Forestry England started a programme of tree clearance from the top of the fell in 2001 and the summit of the fell is now clear; it is hoped that it will revert to Calluna, heather moorland in years to come. Influential guidebook author Alfred Wainwright voiced strong opposition to the afforestation of Dodd in his Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells in 1962; it took 40 years for his wishes to come true. Apart from his solo recordings, Smith is best known for his work backing both Muddy Waters and Big Mama Thornton. Life and career Born in West Helena, Arkansas, United States, but brought up in Cairo, Illinois, Smith's mother taught him how to play the harmonica from the age of 4. In his teenage years he performed in a country band with Early Woods and Curtis Gould. He also joined Mississippi gospel group, the Jackson Jubilee Singers. From the late 1930s and into the 1940s, Smith travelled throughout the south and played harmonica on the streets. In 1941, Smith moved to Rock Island, Illinois and joined a group with drummer Francis Clay. George Logie-Smith OBE (2 December 191419 April 2007) was an Australian orchestra and choral conductor, music examiner, and music educator. Biography George Logie Smith was born in Ascot Vale a suburb of Melbourne, to parents David Edgar "Edgar" Smith and Margaret Jane "Maggie" (nee Logie) who had migrated to Australia from Scotland before he was born. His birth registration shows the year of birth as 1913 although more usually his birth is recorded as 2 December 1914. At age 15 he conducted Handel's ''Messiah'' at a local church. He studied piano with Roy Shepherd, a pupil of Alfred Cortot. He won a number of piano competitions and gave recitals. Shepherd was appointed Director of Music at Geelong College in 1936, but had to withdraw within a year due to illness. He persuaded the headmaster, the Rev.
