George Schroth
George Edward Schroth (December 31, 1899 – January 26, 1989) was an American water polo player who competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics and in the 1928 Summer Olympics. He was born in Sacramento, California and died in Los Molinos, California. Career and recognitions In 1924 he won the bronze medal with the American water polo team. He played all five matches and scored one goal. Four years later he was a member of the American team which finished fifth in the Water polo at the 1928 Summer Olympics, 1928 Olympic water polo tournament. He played both matches. In 1976, he was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame. 1924 Summer Olympics
The 1924 Summer Olympics (french: Jeux olympiques d'été de 1924), officially the Games of the VIII Olympiad (french: Jeux de la VIIIe olympiade) and also known as Paris 1924, were an international multi-sport event held in Paris, France. The opening ceremony was held on 5 July, but some competitions had already started on 4 May. The Games were the second to be hosted by Paris (after 1900), making it the first city to host the Olympics twice. Competition format The water polo tournament consisted primarily of a single-elimination bracket that determined the gold and silver medals. The bronze medal was supposed to be awarded through a modified Bergvall system tournament, in which the teams who lost to the top two nations (that is, Belgium and Great Britain—who had lost to Germany—and France, the United States, and Argentina—who had lost to Hungary) would conduct another single-elimination tournament for the third place. However, the tournament organizers did not understand the system.
