George Ryland (Queensland Politician)
George Ryland (1855 - 19 October 1920) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Ryland was born at Attyconner, Westmeath, Ireland, the son of George Ryland Snr. and his wife Rachel (née Lee). He arrived in Queensland in 1866 and from 1875 until 1886 was a sugar and railway worker in Maryborough. In 1875 Ryland was working as a miner in Gympie and from 1890 was an organiser with the Amalgamated Miners' Association. After his time in the Queensland Parliament he was based in Port Darwin, as the Director of Lands for two years and then he worked in Brisbane as a valuator with the Public Curator's Office in 1915. On 23 August 1880 he married Maria Ann Newburn and together had two sons and a daughter. Gympie ( ) is a city and a Suburbs and localities (Australia), locality in the Gympie Region, Queensland, Australia. In the Wide Bay-Burnett District, Gympie is about north of the state capital, Brisbane. The city lies on the Mary River (Queensland), Mary River, which floods Gympie occasionally. The Speaker of the House of Representatives is the presiding officer of the House of Representatives, the lower house of the Parliament of Australia. 1912 Queensland State Election
Elections were held in the Australian state of Queensland on 27 April 1912 to elect the 72 members of the state's Legislative Assembly. The election was the first for the recently formed Liberal government of Digby Denham, who had been premier since 7 February 1911. The opposition Labor Party was led by David Bowman, who had been Labor leader since 15 April 1907. Results Denham and his government were returned to office despite a swing to Labor of almost 10 percent. This was largely due to winning newly created seats in rural areas, while losing seats in Brisbane which mostly went to Labor. A borough is an administrative division in various English-speaking countries. In principle, the term ''borough'' designates a self-governing walled town, although in practice, official use of the term varies widely. History In the Middle Ages, boroughs were settlements in England that were granted some self-government; burghs were the Scottish equivalent. In medieval England, boroughs were also entitled to elect members of parliament. The use of the word ''borough'' probably derives from the burghal system of Alfred the Great. Gympie Cemetery
Gympie Cemetery is the cemetery for Gympie, Queensland, Australia. The cemetery is located on Corella Road and is managed by the Gympie Cemetery Trust. History It was first unofficially located on the corner of Alfred and King Street, currently the site of the ambulance station next to the Gympie Hospital. Following approximately 50 burials at this site, the Tozer Park Road Cemetery was opened on 1 December 1869. The first burial register was started at that time. The flood-prone town of Gympie was subjected to diseases such as diphtheria, and the Tozer Park Cemetery bore the blame. It was found that the ground was too low and hard digging, resulting in shallow burials that caused distressing odours. Tozer Park Cemetery was closed in 1886. The cemetery was relocated to its current location on Corella Road at Two Mile, and an area of 60 acres was granted. The Queensland Government is the democratic administrative authority of the Australian state of Queensland.
