George Rowe (actor)
George Dewey Thompson Rowe (September 15, 1894 – February 5, 1975) was an American character actor of the silent film era, known for his cross-eyed look. Born in Maine in 1894, Rowe broke into the film industry in the 1919 short film, ''Tough Luck'', starring Snub Pollard. Over his ten-year career, he appeared in over 125 shorts, many of which for Hal Roach, including several with Stan Laurel and in the iconic Our Gang series. His Roach Studio contract was terminated in 1925, after which he toured the West Coast in vaudeville for a time. Rowe's film career ended with the advent of sound film. In February 1919, Rowe was married to Wanda Lorraine Rowe. Rowe died on February 5, 1975, in Santa Barbara, California, at the age of 80, and was interred at the Santa Barbara Cemetery. His widow died on April 26, 1983, at the age of 90 and was interred at the same cemetery alongside him. ''Rupert of Hee Haw'' is a 1924 American silent film starring Stan Laurel and drawing on the Ruritanian romance of ''Rupert of Hentzau'', Anthony Hope's sequel to ''The Prisoner of Zenda''. Plot In some European castle the King (Stan) is getting royally drunk. His guests, mainly in Prussian style uniforms, await downstairs but he struggles to get down. When the cuckoo clock sounds he shoots it. The King wants more drink. The princess says he needs a punch on the nose. She sends a message to Rudolph, an American style gent who looks just like the King. He tells Princess Minnie that Count Aspirin intercepted her letter. Count Aspirin arrives but he knows Rupert is not the King because he is not drunk. The missing letter gets grabbed from one person to the next. ''Under Two Jags'' is a 1923 American silent comedy film featuring Stan Laurel. The title spoofs the film '' Under Two Flags'' (1922). Plot The film is set in the city of Scorching Sands in the Desert of Dhumbell. Stan is the only westerner on the street until he enters a saloon which has soldiers watching a girl in uniform (and wearing a fez) dancing on a table. Stan blows the foam off his beer and it hits the officer in the face. He beckons Stan over. He is about to leave when the girl says Stop. He flips a coin and decides to join the soldiers. Stan is then in uniform chatting with the girl. A posh lady stops to speak to him. Stan drops a bottle of beer and the spray soaks everyone. Oranges And Lemons (film)
''Oranges and Lemons'' is a 1923 American one-reel silent comedy starring Stan Laurel. He plays an incompetent employee of a fruit orchard who only manages to keep his job because his fellow workers are even more inept, including the lovely packer (Grant) who flirts with him. As is typical of his films in this era, his character is far more aggressive and physical than the more familiar meek personality he adopted when he later teamed with Oliver Hardy. The name "Sunkist" was taken from the long-established citrus fruit company Sunkist Growers, Incorporated. Plot Sunkist (Stan) wearing an under-sized sombrero is operating a pointless machine, where his boss drops fruit into a hopper at one end, and the fruit is scooped up and dropped into a tin bath held by another employee.
