George Richard Savage Nassau
George Richard Savage Nassau (1756–1823) was an English country gentleman, known as a bibliophile, Life Born on 5 September 1756, he was the second son of the Hon. Richard Savage Nassau. His mother, Anne, was the only daughter and heiress of Edward Spencer of Rendlesham, Suffolk, and widow of James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton. Under the will of Sir John Barker, 7th Baronet of Grimston Hall, Trimley St. Martin, Suffolk, who died in 1766, he inherited considerable property. In 1805 Nassau served as high sheriff of Suffolk. He died in Charles Street, Berkeley Square, London, on 18 August 1823, after a paralytic seizure, and was buried in Easton Church, Suffolk, where a monument was erected to his memory. Book collector Nassau formed a library, rich in emblem books, early English poetry, and drama. Richard Savage Nassau
Richard Savage Nassau (1 June 1723 – 17 May 1780) was an English Member of Parliament who served from 1747 to 1780, with a 20-year gap between 1754 and 1774. He was born at St Osyth's Priory, the second son of Frederick Nassau de Zuylestein, 3rd Earl of Rochford, by his wife Bessy, an illegitimate daughter of Richard Savage, 4th Earl Rivers. He was first elected to Parliament at the 1747 British general election, 1747 general election for Colchester (UK Parliament constituency), Colchester along with Charles Gray (English politician), Charles Gray. He supported the government of Henry Pelham and Thomas Pelham-Holles, 1st Duke of Newcastle, the Duke of Newcastle and did not seek re-election at the 1754 British general election, next general election in 1754. Thomas Hearne (artist)
Thomas Hearne (22 September 1744 – 13 April 1817) was an English landscape painter, engraver and illustrator. Hearne's watercolours were typified by applying a wash of subtle subdued colours over a clear outline in fine brush, pen or pencil. His techniques were studied by younger artists such as Thomas Girtin and J. M. W. Turner. Early life Thomas Hearne was born at Marshfield, Gloucestershire. When he was five years old, his father, William, died and Thomas moved with his mother, Prudence, to Brinkworth, Wiltshire. One of his biographers, Simon Fenwick, suggests that the nearby Malmesbury Abbey proved an inspiration to Hearne's later interest in Gothic architecture. As a teenager he was apprenticed to his uncle who worked as a pastry cook in Maiden Lane, Covent Garden. Next door was a print shop; Miller, the engraver, no doubt facilitated his move to the profession of artist. Robert Harding Evans (1778–1857) was an English bookseller and auctioneer. Life Evans was the son of Thomas Evans (1742–1784). After an education at Westminster School he was apprenticed to Thomas Payne of the Mews Gate, and succeeded to the business of James Edwards, bookseller in Pall Mall, London. In 1812 Evans began a long career as auctioneer with the sale of the Duke of Roxburghe's library. Among other famous libraries dispersed by him were those of: * Colonel Stanley (1813); * Stanesby Alchorne (1813); * John Towneley (1814); and * James Edwards (1815). Easton, Suffolk
Easton in England is situated on the River Deben around three miles south of Framlingham and is the former estate village of Easton Park, one-time seat of the Duke of Hamilton. The population of the parish at the 2011 Census was 331. William Douglas-Hamilton, 12th Duke of Hamilton, died without male issue in 1895 and the title passed to his fourth cousin, who became Alfred Douglas-Hamilton, 13th Duke of Hamilton. Although the Dukedom and estates had passed, a large share of the Hamilton lands and properties, including Easton park, went to Lady Mary, the 12th Duke and Duchess's only child. After World War I the British government imposed colossal taxes on the rich to help defray the cost of the war. Isaac Johnson (1754–1835)
Isaac Johnson (November 1, 1803 – March 15, 1853) was a US politician and the 12th Governor of the state of Louisiana. Born on his father's plantation "Troy" near St. Francisville in West Feliciana Parish, Johnson was the fourth son of John Hunter Johnson and Thenia Munson. Johnson's grandfather, Isaac Johnson, arrived in the area in the 1770s, and his father had a leading role in the West Florida Rebellion. Later he served as a British officer in Natchez, Mississippi during the English occupation and was a lawyer, planter, parish sheriff and judge, finally settling at Fairview Plantation on Bayou Sara in Louisiana. Johnson was taught by private tutors early and read law under his father and his uncle Joseph E. Johnson, eventually establishing his own law practice. Johnson married Charlotte McDermott in 1828. George Frost (1754–1821) was an English landscape painting, landscape painter who lived in Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Biography Frost was the son of a builder at Ousden in Suffolk, and was originally brought up to his father's business. Thomas Gainsborough
Thomas Gainsborough (14 May 1727 (baptised) – 2 August 1788) was an English portrait and landscape painter, draughtsman, and printmaker. Along with his rival Sir Joshua Reynolds, he is considered one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. William Byrne (engraver)
William Byrne (1743–1805) was a British engraver. Life Byrne was born in London in 1743. After studying some time under his uncle, an artist little known, he went to Paris, where he became a pupil of Aliamet, and afterwards of Wille. As well as making individual plates, he worked with Thomas Hearne on the ''Antiquities of Great Britain'', which they jointly published in 1786. He died in London in 1805 and was buried in Old St. Pancras churchyard. He was the father of Mary, Anne Frances, Letitia, Elizabeth and John Byrne, all artists. Their mother's name is unknown and William married again to Marianne Francotte in 1792. Landscape engraver John Landseer was his pupil. Anne Hamilton, Duchess of Hamilton (1720 – 9 March 1771) formerly Anne Spencer, was the third wife of James Hamilton, 5th Duke of Hamilton. Life She was the daughter of Edward Spencer of Rendlesham, Suffolk, where she was born. Thus she was the sister of Elizabeth Spencer, later the wife of Sir James Dashwood, 2nd Baronet, and the aunt of the future Anne Stewart, Countess of Galloway. His second wife having died in 1729, the duke married Anne Spencer on 21 August 1737. They had three children: *Lady Anne Hamilton (1738–1780), who married Arthur Chichester, 1st Marquess of Donegall, and had children *Archibald Hamilton, 9th Duke of Hamilton (1740–1819) *Lord Spencer Hamilton (1742–1789) who died unmarried in Paris.
