George R. Mann
George Richard Mann (July 12, 1856 – March 20, 1939) was an American architect, trained at MIT, whose designs included the Arkansas State Capitol. He was the leading architect in Arkansas from 1900 until 1930, and his designs were among the finalists in competitions for the capitols of several other states. Career Mann was born in Syracuse, Indiana and trained at MIT. From 1906 to 1912, Mann's office was a Beaux-Arts commercial building built to his design. It remains standing, at 115 East 5th Street, Little Rock, Arkansas. Beginning in 1913, he partnered with Eugene Howard Stern, as the architectural firm of Mann & Stern. He became dissatisfied working with Stern and the partnership ended by 1928. In 1929, he had partnered in the firm Mann, Wanger & King. Gus Blass Department Store
The Gus Blass Department Store is a historic commercial building at 318-324 Main Street in Little Rock, Arkansas. It is a seven-story masonry structure, built in 1912 to a design by George R. Mann, a leading Arkansas architect. It was one of the first instances of two-way concrete slab construction in the nation, and was one of the first department stores in the state to be air conditioned (in 1936). The Blass Department Store was for many years the city's largest department store, and remained in business here into the 1970s, ultimately becoming a part of the Dillard's department store chain before closing in 1972. Stuttgart, Arkansas
Stuttgart is a city in and the county seat of the northern district of Arkansas County, Arkansas, United States. Established by German settlers, it was named for its larger German counterpart. Known as the "Rice and Duck Capital of the World", the city is an international destination for waterfowl hunting along the Mississippi Flyway. Stuttgart is the most important city on the Arkansas Grand Prairie, a region known for rice cultivation. Riceland Hotel
The Hotel Riceland is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is located on the southwest corner of 3rd Street and South Main Street in downtown Stuttgart, Arkansas. Construction began in 1919, with the grand opening in 1923. The hotel closed in 1970. The luxurious five-story hotel was designed by George R. Mann complete with rooftop garden. It is the largest commercial building in Stuttgart. Duckhunters would flock to the hotel in winter for the annual shoot. Pulaski County Courthouse (Arkansas)
The Pulaski County Courthouse is located at 405 West Markham Street in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas, the state capital and the county seat of Pulaski County. It is set among a number of other state and city government buildings, on a city block bounded by West Markham, Spring, West 2nd, and South Broadway Streets, with a county park occupying the western portion of the block. The courthouse has two portions: an elaborate Romanesque edifice built of stone and brick in 1887–89 to a design by Max A. Orlopp, and a large four-story Beaux Arts annex designed by George Mann and added in 1913–14. The annex is acknowledged as one of Mann's most successful commissions. Pine Bluff is the eleventh-largest city in the state of Arkansas and the county seat of Jefferson County. It is the principal city of the Pine Bluff Metropolitan Statistical Area and part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Pine Bluff Combined Statistical Area. The Hotel Pines is a historic commercial building at the northwest corner of West 5th and Main Streets in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. It is a large six-story U-shaped masonry structure, with a two-story section filling the center of the U. The center section has a portico projecting over the sidewalk, with Classical Revival detailing and paired columns for support. Built in 1913 and in operation as a hotel until 1970, it was Pine Bluff's grandest hotel. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Bentley Hotel
Bentley Hotel, usually known as the Hotel Bentley, is a classic Renaissance-style hotel located near City Hall in downtown Alexandria in central Louisiana. Description and history The hotel was built by the timber baron Joseph Bentley at a cost of $700,000; allegedly because he had been refused dinner service at another local hotel for not being properly attired. It opened to the public in August, 1908, and Mr Bentley lived in the hotel until his death in 1938. On November 15, 1979, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel was once owned by the Pineville real estate developer Buddy Tudor, who worked for its historic preservation. Former owner Robert G. "Bob" Dean, Jr., of Baton Rouge closed the hotel in December 2004 and placed it on the market, at one time asking $12 million. The Gazette Building in downtown Little Rock, Arkansas was built in 1908. It was designed by architect George R. Mann, and built by Peter Hotze. The building was listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Originally and for many years, the building served as the headquarters of the ''Arkansas Gazette'' newspaper. After the ''Gazette'' was sold and became the ''Arkansas Democrat-Gazette'', the building served as the national campaign headquarters for the 1992 presidential campaign of Governor Bill Clinton.
