George Preston (military Officer)
Lieutenant General George Preston (b. 1707- 31 January 1785, Weston, Bath) was in the British Army for 61 years and led the Royal Scots Greys. Family He was the son of William Preston and Mary Ramsey of Gorton. Preston married Lucy, oldest daughter of James Johnston (Secretary of State). His son Sir Robert Preston, grandson Sir Robert Preston and other grandson Sir Henry Preston were Preston baronets. Career In 1739, Preston became a cornet. In a duel on 30 November 1743 at Ghent, Lieut. Preston killed Cornet Alexander Hepburn (brother of Robert Hepburn). During the War of the Austrian Succession, Preston fought in the Battle of Dettingen (1743), Battle of Fontenoy (1745), Battle of Roucoux (1746), and the Battle of Val (1747), where he was wounded. Royal Scots Greys
The Royal Scots Greys was a Cavalry regiments of the British Army, cavalry regiment of the British Army from 1707 until 1971, when they amalgamated with the 3rd Carabiniers (Prince of Wales's Dragoon Guards) to form the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards. The regiment's history began in 1678, when three independent troops of Scots Dragoons were raised. In 1681, these troops were regimented to form The Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons, numbered the 4th Dragoons in 1694. They were already mounted on gray (horse), grey horses by this stage and were already being referred to as the ''Grey Dragoons''. In 1707, they were renamed The Royal North British Dragoons (''North Britain'' then being the envisaged common name for Scotland), but were already being referred to as the ''Scots Greys''. Battle Of Kirch Denkern
The Battle of Villinghausen (or Vellinghausen, also known as the Battle of Kirchdenkern) was a battle in the Seven Years' War fought on the 15th and 16 July 1761 in the western area of present-day Germany, between a large French army and an Anglo-German force led by Prince Ferdinand of Brunswick. Background Two French armies, under two Marshals, Duc de Broglie and Prince de Soubise, met up in July 1761, intending to force Prince Ferdinand out of Lippstadt, an important town. Allied reinforcements under General Spörcken arrived bringing Ferdinand's forces up to 65,000 while the combined French armies numbered around 90,000.
