George Porter (cricketer)
George Porter (3 December 1861 – 15 July 1908) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1881 and 1896. Porter was born at Kilburn, Derbyshire, the son of John Porter a brickyard worker, and his wife Sarah Brentnall and was apprenticed to his uncle as a chimney sweep. He spent his winters as a sweep, but being a capable cricketer spent the summers as a professional cricketer. His first recorded cricket match was with the Northwood Club, West Cowes, Isle of Wight in 1880. In 1881 Porter was living at Chapel Street, Spondon, DerbyshireBritish Census 1881 and was with the South Derbyshire Club. Also in the 1881 season he played one match for Derbyshire against Lancashire in which he took a wicket in the first innings, but did not play for the club again until the 1888 season. Kilburn, Derbyshire
Kilburn is a village and civil parish in the English county of Derbyshire, known as Kilbourne until around 100 years ago. The population of the civil parish taken at the 2011 Census was 3,618. Forming part of the borough of Amber Valley, Kilburn has few amenities for the people who live there including a local police station, community officer and several parks for young children. There is a Chinese restaurant, Jade Garden. The local fish and chip shop, Kilburn Fish Bar, closed in April 2021. There is a shop in the village, Metro Stores. The village post office is inside of Metro. There are two hair and beauty salons in Kilburn, Amber Hair and Vanity. Derbyshire Country Cricket Club in 1894 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for twenty three years. Derbyshire's matches were re-accorded first class status in this season but they did not start to take part in the County Championship until the following season. 1894 season The captains of the leading counties determined that in 1894 Derbyshire with Essex, Leicestershire and Warwickshire , should be given first-class status. The match results did not count in the County Championship until 1895, when Hampshire was also admitted. Derbyshire played eleven first-class games including one against MCC. Hampshire County Cricket Club is one of eighteen first-class county clubs within the domestic cricket structure of England and Wales. It represents the historic county of Hampshire. Hampshire teams formed by earlier organisations, principally the Hambledon Club, always had first-class status and the same applied to the county club when it was founded in 1863. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1895 was the first season in which the English county cricket club Derbyshire played in the County Championship which had been established in 1890. The club settled their place by coming fifth with five championship wins. It was the club's 25th season although the matches in the period between 1888 and 1893 were not given first-class status.
