George Perry Johnson
George Perry Johnson (October 29, 1885 - October 17, 1977) was a film producer, writer, and newsreel producer in the United States. He produced Lincoln Motion Picture Company films with his brother Noble Johnson and later produced newsreels for African American audiences. He graduated from the Hampton Institute in Virginia in 1904. He moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma and established '' The Tulsa Guide'' newspaper in 1906. In 1913 he moved to Omaha, Nebraska and worked at the U.S. Post Office. He later settled in Los Angeles and worked as a writer, producer, and distributor for the Lincoln Motion Picture Company during its existence from 1916 until 1923 while also working for the post office. After the film company closed he established the Pacific Coast News Bureau in 1923. It lasted until 1927. The Lincoln Motion Picture Company was an American film production company founded in 1916 by Noble Johnson and George Perry Johnson. Noble Johnson was president of the company, and the secretary was actor Clarence A. Brooks. Dr. James T. Smith was treasurer, and Dudley A. Brooks was the assistant secretary. The company is known as the first producer of race movies. Established in Omaha, Nebraska, the company relocated to Los Angeles the following year. Noble Johnson
Noble Johnson (April 18, 1881 – January 9, 1978), later known as Mark Noble, was an American actor and film producer. He appeared in films such as ''The Mummy'' (1932), ''The Most Dangerous Game'' (1932), ''King Kong'' (1933) and ''Son of Kong'' (1933). Biography Standing 6'2" and weighing 215 pounds, Johnson had an impressive physique that made him in demand as a character actor and bit player. In the silent era, he assayed a wide variety of characters of different races in a plethora of films, primarily serials, westerns and adventure movies. While Johnson was cast as black in many films, he also played Native American and Latino parts and "exotic" characters such as Arabians or even a devil in hell in ''Dante's Inferno'' (1924). The film ''By Right of Birth'' premiered on June 22, 1921, in Los Angeles, California. This film is one of the few surviving films of the Lincoln Motion Picture Company, which is known as the first producer of race films and of such silent films as ''By Right of Birth''. The company was founded in 1916 and in 1923 produced its last movie, ''The Heart of a Negro.'' Background The film was directed by Harry Gant, who is also responsible for the films ''The Realization of a Negro's Ambition'' (1916) and ''Absent'' (1928). The story was by George Perry Johnson, both a writer and a member of the Lincoln Motion Picture Company executive board. Currently, only small pieces of this film still exist. After almost 100 years since the creation of its 6 reels totaling 6,000 feet of film, only one four-minute clip of consecutive scenes from it is known.
