George Nicolescu
George Nicolescu (; born 12 March 1950) is a blind Romanian musician. Born in Ploieşti, Nicolescu has four sisters. He attended the Bucharest School for Amblyopia Patients (1957-1959), middle school and high school (1960-1968) and the School for the Blind in Cluj (1968–1972). Self-taught, he made his singing debut in Cluj and in 1970 won first prize at the ''Tinereţe pe portativ'' ("Youth on the Scale") festival. A few years later, the composer George Grigoriu began to influence him, and the two began collaborating. In 1973, his first hit, "Eternitate" ("Eternity"), was released, and the following year came four hits released on a 45, under Grigoriu's name. In 1972 he gained admission to the University of Bucharest's Faculty of Romance Languages, French-Romanian section. He graduated in 1976 and the following April began teaching French at the School for the Blind in Buzău, where he remained until 1985. Blind musicians are singers or instrumentalists, or in some cases singer-accompanists, who are legally blind. Resources Historically, many blind musicians, including some of the most famous, have performed without the benefit of formal instruction, since such instruction relies extensively on written musical notation. However, today there are many resources available for blind musicians who wish to learn Western music theory and classical notation. Louis Braille, the man who created the braille alphabet for the blind, also created a system of classical notation for the blind called Braille music. Corina Chiriac (born 26 October 1949) is a Romanian singer, composer, lyricist, television director and actress. She was one of the most successful Romanian singers of the 1970s and 1980s. So far she has recorded over 500 songs and performed in many Romanian TV variety shows. She toured Eastern Europe extensively during the 70s and early 80s (the former East Germany, Russia, Bulgaria, Poland, the former Czechoslovakia etc.). The Romanian word lăutar (; plural: ''lăutari'') denotes a class of musicians. The term was adopted by members of a professional clan of Romani musicians in the late XVIII century. The term is derived from ''lăută'', the Romanian word for lute. ''Lăutari'' usually perform in bands, called taraf.
