George Montagu, 9th Earl Of Sandwich
George Charles Montagu, 9th Earl of Sandwich (29 December 1874 – 15 June 1962), known as George Montagu until 1916, was a British Conservative politician. Sandwich was the son of Rear-Admiral the Hon. Victor Alexander Montagu, second son of John Montagu, 7th Earl of Sandwich. His mother was Lady Agneta Harriet, daughter of Charles Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke. He was Assistant Private Secretary to the Board of Trade from 1898 to 1900. The latter year he was returned to Parliament for Huntingdon, a seat he held until 1906. In 1916 Sandwich succeeded his uncle in the earldom and entered the House of Lords. He later served as Lord-Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire between 1922 and 1946. Marriage and family Lord Sandwich married Alberta Sturges, daughter of William Sturges of New York City, at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge, in 1905. Alberta Sturges
Alberta Montagu, Countess of Sandwich (née Sturges; 7 September 1877 – 23 October 1951) was an American heiress, diarist, and letter writer who was the wife of George Montagu, 9th Earl of Sandwich. Like many Gilded Age debutantes from the United States, she married into the British aristocracy and took on the running of her husband's family's ancestral seat, Hinchingbrooke House. Lady Sandwich was a close friend of Mildred Barnes Bliss and was an accomplished musician, writer, and linguist. She was a friend and devotee of the Hindu monk and philosopher Swami Vivekananda, whom she had met in her childhood when he stayed at her family's New York estate. Lady Sandwich hosted Vivekananda in Chicago, New York, and Paris, accompanied him on a trip to Rome, and corresponded with him throughout her life. John Edward Hollister Montagu, 11th Earl of Sandwich (born 11 April 1943), is a British entrepreneur, politician and nobleman. He has sat in the House of Lords on the crossbenches since 1995. Biography Lord Sandwich is the eldest son of Victor Montagu, who disclaimed the earldom of Sandwich in 1964, and his first wife Rosemary Maud (''née'' Peto). He succeeded his father to the earldom in 1995 and is one of the ninety elected hereditary peers that remain in the House of Lords after the passing of the House of Lords Act 1999. Edward George Henry Montagu, 8th Earl of Sandwich KStJ (13 July 1839 – 26 June 1916), styled Viscount Hinchingbrooke until 1884, was a British peer, Conservative politician and author. Montagu was the eldest son of John William Montagu, 7th Earl of Sandwich, and his wife Lady Mary Paget. Field Marshal Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey, was his maternal grandfather. He was elected to the House of Commons for Huntingdon in 1876, a seat he held until 1884, when he succeeded his father in the earldom and took his seat in the House of Lords. Lord Sandwich was colonel of the Huntingdonshire Militia, and served as Lord Lieutenant of Huntingdonshire between 1891 and 1916. He was appointed a ''Knight of Grace'' of the Venerable Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in December 1901. Lord Sandwich died unmarried in June 1916, aged 76, and was succeeded in the earldom by his nephew George Charles Montagu. Earl of Sandwich is a noble title in the Peerage of England, held since its creation by the House of Montagu. It is nominally associated with Sandwich, Kent. It was created in 1660 for the prominent naval commander Admiral Sir Edward Montagu. He was made Baron Montagu of St Neots, of St Neots in the County of Huntingdon, and Viscount Hinchingbrooke, at the same time, also in the Peerage of England. The viscountcy is used as the courtesy title by the heir apparent to the earldom.
