George Mills (politician)
George Mills (January 17, 1876 – August 17, 1948) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1920 to 1926 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government and opposition. Political career Mills ran for a seat to the Alberta Legislature in a by-election held in the Athabasca electoral district on June 3, 1920. He stood as the Liberal candidate in a straight fight against former MLA and Independent candidate James Cornwall. Mills won the race with almost 70% of the popular vote. Mills ran for a second term a year later in the 1921 Alberta general election, 1921 general election. Mills was projected to be returned unopposed, however Conservative candidate John Angelo filed nomination papers at the last minute. Mills was returned with a landslide. Oxford County is a regional municipality in the Canadian province of Ontario. Athabasca was a provincial electoral district in Alberta, Canada, mandated to return a single member to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1905 to 1986. History The Athabasca electoral district was one of the original 25 electoral districts contested in the 1905 Alberta general election upon Alberta joining Confederation in September 1905. Throughout the years the district's boundaries would continue to change; however, the district would remain in North-East Alberta throughout the 81 years of its existence. Alexander Grant MacKay
Alexander Grant MacKay (March 7, 1860 – April 25, 1920) was a Canadian teacher, lawyer and provincial level politician. He served prominent posts in two provincial legislatures as Leader of the Opposition in Ontario and as a Cabinet Minister in Alberta. Early life Alexander Grant MacKay was born in Sydenham, Ontario, in Grey County on March 7, 1860, to parents Hugh MacKay and Katherine McInnis. He attended post secondary studies at the Owen Sound College and the University of Toronto obtaining a Master of Business degree. After university he became the principal of Port Rowan High School. In 1891 he joined the Ontario bar and served as a criminal lawyer until 1894, when he became Crown Attorney for Grey County. He served that role until 1912. James Cornwall
Lieutenant-Colonel James Kennedy "Peace River Jim" Cornwall (October 29, 1869 – November 20, 1955) was a provincial politician from Alberta, Canada. He served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta from 1909 to 1913 sitting with the Liberal caucus in government. Business career Cornwall was a founding member of the Northern Transportation Company which grew out of the Northern Traders Company. He served as the company's first President. The company operated fleets of steamboats and barge-towing tugboats on the Mackenzie River system. Political career Cornwall ran as a provincial Liberal candidate in the 1905 Alberta general election in the Peace River electoral district. 1921 Alberta General Election
The 1921 Alberta general election was held on July 18, 1921, to elect members to the 5th Alberta Legislative Assembly. It was one of only five times that Alberta has changed governments. The Liberal Party, which had governed the province since its creation in 1905, led by Charles Stewart at the time of the election, was defeated by a very-new United Farmers of Alberta political party. The UFA was an agricultural lobby organization that was contesting its first general election. It had previously elected one MLA in a by-election. Under the Block Voting system, each voter in Edmonton and Calgary could vote for up to five candidates, while Medicine Hat voters could vote for up to two candidates. The 1926 Alberta general election was held on June 28, 1926, to elect members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. The United Farmers of Alberta government that had first been elected in 1921 was re-elected, taking a majority of the seats in the Alberta Legislature. Herbert Greenfield had resigned as United Farmers leader and premier, and John E. Brownlee led the UFA to this second election victory, increasing the UFA's number of seats. The writs of election were issued on May 10, 1926, allowing an election period of 40 days. 1926 was Alberta's first general election where Single transferable voting (STV) was used in the three largest cities and Instant-runoff voting was used everywhere else.
