George Milke
George E. Milke (born 1954) is a former baseball pitcher. He won the 1974 College World Series Most Outstanding Player award while a sophomore at University of Southern California. He is one of seven players from USC to win that award. The others are Bill Thom, Bud Hollowell, Bill Seinsoth, Russ McQueen, Rod Boxberger and Wes Rachels. Prior to playing collegiately, he attended Marian Catholic High School in San Diego, California. In 1973 and 1974, he played for the Alaska Goldpanners of the Alaska Baseball League. Following his college career, he played professionally from 1975 to 1979, although he never reached the big leagues. He was first drafted by the California Angels in the sixth round of the 1972 draft, but he chose not to sign. When he was drafted by the New York Mets in the third round of the 1975 draft, he did sign. In baseball, the pitcher is the player who throws ("pitches") the baseball from the pitcher's mound toward the catcher to begin each play, with the goal of retiring a batter, who attempts to either make contact with the pitched ball or draw a walk. The Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks are a collegiate summer baseball team which was founded in 1960 as an Independent league baseball, independent Barnstorm (sports), barnstorming team. The Goldpanners were charter members of the Alaska Baseball League at the league's inception in 1974. Jackson Mets
The Jackson Mets were a professional baseball team based in Jackson, Mississippi, from 1975 through 1990. As of 2010, they were the longest-tenured club to be based in the Jackson metropolitan area. The Alaska Baseball League (ABL) is an amateur collegiate summer baseball league. Players in the league must have attended one year of college and must have one year of NCAA eligibility remaining. The Midnight Sun Game, held at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks on the longest day of each year, is one of the highlights of the Alaska Baseball League season. 1974 College World Series
The 1974 NCAA Division I baseball tournament was played at the end of the 1974 NCAA Division I baseball season to determine the national champion of college baseball. The tournament concluded with eight teams competing in the College World Series, a double-elimination tournament in its twenty-eighth year. Eight regional districts sent representatives to the College World Series with preliminary rounds within each district serving to determine each representative. These events would later become known as regionals. Each district had its own format for selecting teams, resulting in 28 teams participating in the tournament at the conclusion of their regular season, and in some cases, after a conference tournament.
