George Menard
George Francis Menard (September 2, 1927 – April 18, 1990) was an American ice hockey coach. He was the head coach of St. Lawrence during their renaissance after World War II taking them to five Frozen Fours during his tenure. Career As many people did during the second world war George Menard enlisted in the armed services after graduating high school, but as he enlisted in October 1945 his services were unneeded for the war effort. The following fall he began attending Brown University, playing both ice hockey and baseball for the Bears to such an outstanding degree that he was signed by the New York Yankees. George eschewed a professional playing career in favor of coaching, becoming the head coach at St. Lawrence in 1955 for both ice hockey and baseball. Burrillville, Rhode Island
Burrillville is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island, United States. The population was 16,158 at the 2020 census. It was incorporated as an independent municipality on November 17, 1806 when the Rhode Island General Assembly authorized the residents of then North Glocester to elect its own officers. The town was named for 19th century United States senator James Burrill, Jr. who was then the Rhode Island Attorney General. History Burrillville was probably first settled sometime around 1662, when the first Europeans began to settle the Nipmuc lands. The Town was originally a part of Glocester, Rhode Island. The NCAA Division I men's ice hockey tournament is a college ice hockey tournament held in the United States by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Like other Division I championships, it is the highest level of NCAA men's hockey competition. Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado hosted the tournament for the first ten years and has hosted eleven times overall, the most of any venue. Denver and Michigan have won the most tournaments with nine, while Vic Heyliger has coached the most championship teams, winning six times with Michigan between 1948 and 1956. 1959 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1959 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1958–59 NCAA men's ice hockey season, the 12th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 12 and 14, 1959, and concluded with North Dakota defeating Michigan State 4-3 in overtime. All games were played at the RPI Field House in Troy, New York. This was the last tournament to be won by an independent school. (as of 2016) Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The Big Ten and Tri-State League champions received bids into the tournament as did two independent schools. Format The Tri-State League champion was seeded as the top eastern team while the Big Ten champion was given the top western seed. 1956 NCAA Division I Men's Ice Hockey Tournament
The 1956 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament was the culmination of the 1955–56 NCAA Division I men's ice hockey season, the 9th such tournament in NCAA history. It was held between March 15 and 17, 1956, and concluded with Michigan defeating Michigan Tech 7-5. All games were played at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Vic Heyliger captured his 6th and final National title with the Wolverines, all done in the first 9 years of the tournament. As of 2016 he stands as the coach with the most championships overall and the most with one team (6). Qualifying teams Four teams qualified for the tournament, two each from the eastern and western regions. The two best WIHL teams and a Tri-State League representative received bids into the tournament as did one independent school. Bernie McKinnon
Bernie McKinnon was a Canadian ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer and tennis coach for St. Lawrence for over 30 years. He was the head coach both men's and women's teams for most sports as well as for freshman teams when varsity status was limited to three years. Career Bernie McKinnon arrived at Canton in 1953, playing for the freshman ice hockey team before joining the elite varsity squad for the 1954–55 season. McKinnon helps the Saints to a 19-win season and their second NCAA tournament appearance. After a disappointing 4th place finish McKinnon's Saints found themselves back in the tournament in 1956, narrowly losing in overtime to eventual champion Michigan before soundly defeating Boston College in the consolation game. In his senior season McKinnon was one of three team captains but the squad slumped just enough to be left out of the NCAA tournament. Canton (village), New York
Canton is a village and county seat of St. Lawrence County, New York, United States. The village is centrally located in both the town of Canton and the county of St. Lawrence. The population was 7,155 at the 2020 census. The name comes from the Chinese city of Canton (now Guangzhou).
