George Matthews Harding
George Matthews Harding (1882–1959) was an American painter, author-illustrator, and a muralist. He served as an official war artist during World War I and World War II. Life and career George Matthews Harding was born in Philadelphia. At first, he studied architecture at Boston Tech. His final choice of careers was influenced by his older sister Charlotte Harding, who had studied art at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts with Howard Pyle. Charlotte encouraged him to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He attended the academy at night and worked as an architect during the day. The National Society of Mural Painters (NSMP) is an American artists' organization originally known as The Mural Painters. The charter of the society is to advance the techniques and standards for the design and execution of mural art for the enrichment of architecture in the United States. Background The NSMP was founded in 1895, in an era of Beaux-Arts architecture in America, a time when public architecture was integrated with murals, sculpture, mosaics and other artwork, coordinated and themed to assert the identity of the building. Francis James Quirk (June 3, 1907 – February 5, 1974) was an American artist, educator, museum curator, and TV personality. He is best known for his paintings of Edgar Lee Masters and Carl Sandberg, as well as his affiliation with Lehigh University as a professor and curator. Early life and education Francis Quirk was born on June 3, 1907 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. His parents Edward and Anne (née O’Neil) lived on 30 Waldo Street in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Benton Murdoch Spruance
Benton Murdoch Spruance (June 25, 1904–December 6, 1967) American painter, printmaker, architect. Spruance was born and died in Philadelphia. He was a long-term faculty member and Chairman of the Arts Department at Beaver College in Glenside, PA, as well as Chairman of the Printmaking Department of the Philadelphia College of Art. As a printmaker, Spruance was known for his innovations in color lithography with series of works relating to mythological and religious themes, as well as portraiture. His work was part of the painting event in the art competition at the 1936 Summer Olympics.
