George Mackenzie (Royal Navy Officer)
Vice-Admiral George Mackenzie (died 1780) was a Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-Chief, The Nore from 1774 to 1775. Naval career Mackenzie became commanding officer of the frigate in July 1745 and then of the frigate in August 1745. Promoted to captain in January 1746, he commanded, successively, the frigate , the sixth-rate and the fourth-rate and saw action in the Louisbourg Expedition. He went on to command the fifth-rate and saw action in the Raid on St Malo in June 1758, the invasion of Martinique in January 1759 and the invasion of Guadeloupe in spring 1759. After that he was given command of the fourth-rate and took part in the siege of Havana in spring 1762. We went on to command the third-rate and then the third rate . He became Commander-in-Chief Jamaica Station in August 1770 and then served as Commander-in-Chief, The Nore from January 1774 to 1775. Fifth-rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy used to categorise sailing warships, a fifth rate was the second-smallest class of warships in a hierarchical system of six " ratings" based on size and firepower. Rating The rating system in the Royal Navy as originally devised had just four rates, but early in the reign of Charles I, the original fourth rate (derived from the "Small Ships" category under his father, James I) was divided into new classifications of fourth, fifth, and sixth rates. While a fourth-rate ship was defined as a ship of the line, fifth and the smaller sixth-rate ships were never included among ships-of-the-line. Admiral Thomas Mackenzie (1753 – 20 September 1813) was a prominent British Royal Navy officer of the late eighteenth century. Mackenzie's career, while successful, was blighted by a series of controversies that limited his opportunities and command, resulting in his placement in reserve for the last 19 years of his career. During his early service, Mackenzie served at a number of engagements in the American Revolutionary War and advanced rapidly, but he was caught during service in the Indian Ocean in the midst of a disagreement between two senior officers and as a result was placed in reserve at the end of the war. At the start of the French Revolutionary Wars ten years later Mackenzie was restored to service, and commanded the ship of the line at the Glorious First of June. Third-rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy, a third rate was a ship of the line which from the 1720s mounted between 64 and 80 guns, typically built with two gun decks (thus the related term two-decker). Years of experience proved that the third rate ships embodied the best compromise between sailing ability (speed, handling), firepower, and cost. So, while first-rates and second-rates were both larger and more powerful, third-rate ships were the optimal configuration. The British expedition against Guadeloupe was a military action from January to May 1759, as part of the Seven Years' War. A British invasion of Martinique took place in January 1759 when a large amphibious force under Peregrine Hopson landed on the French-held island of Martinique and unsuccessfully tried to capture it during the Seven Years' War. The Raid on St Malo took place in June 1758 when an amphibious British naval expedition landed close to the French port of St Malo in Brittany. While the town itself was not attacked, as had been initially planned, the British destroyed large amounts of shipping before re-embarking a week later.
