George Lee (English Politician)
Sir George Lee, (''c.'' 1700 – 18 December 1758) was an English Whig politician who sat in the House of Commons for 25 years from 1733 to 1758. Life Lee was fifth son of Sir Thomas Lee, 2nd Baronet, who had married Alice Hopkins, daughter and coheiress of Thomas Hopkins, of London. His elder brother was Sir William Lee, the judge. He entered Clare College, Cambridge in 1716, but migrated to Christ Church, Oxford, where he matriculated on 4 April 1720. He took the degrees of B.C.L. in 1724 and D.C.L. in 1729. On 23 October 1729 he was admitted advocate at Doctors' Commons and soon obtained a practice. Lee was returned as Whig Member of Parliament (MP) for Brackley by the Duke of Bridgwater at a by-election on 25 January 1733. He was returned unopposed at the 1741 British general election but resigned the seat on appointment to office in March 1742 and was the returned as MP for Devizes at a by-election on 23 July 1742. George Alexander Lee
George Alexander Lee (1802 – 8 October 1851) was an English composer. Life Lee was born in London, the son of Henry Lee, a pugilist and innkeeper. He became "tiger" to Lord Barrymore, and his singing led to his being educated for the musical profession. After appearing as a tenor at theatres in Dublin (1825) and London, he joined in producing opera at the Tottenham Street theatre in 1829, and afterwards was connected with musical productions at Drury Lane (1830, 1831) and Covent Garden (1831). He became conductor of the Royal Strand Theatre in 1832 and of the Olympic Theatre in 1845. He married Harriet Waylett, a popular singer, on 23 October 1845 at St Martin-in-the Fields. She had been unwell but seemed to be making a recovery as a press report of July 1848 was optimistic of her making a return to the stage. George Lee (postmaster)
George Lee (1831 – 14 September 1860) was the first Superintendent of the Government Printing Office in Ceylon, between 1833 and 1835 and the Postmaster General of Ceylon between 1844 and 1859. Lee was a highly accomplished literary man, son of an Amsterdam merchant, who traveled to Ceylon in October 1831, as a member of Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton's staff. Wilmot-Horton served as the Governor of Ceylon between 1831 and 1837. ''The Colombo Journal'' was published on 1 January 1832 and printed at the Government Press, with Lee as its editor. Lee was the Superintendent of the Government Press at that time. The newspaper was closed by the Colonial Office on 31 December 1833, following its criticism of the British government. Lee was succeeded as Superintendent by Lieutenant Colonel Grey in 1835. On 3 May 1837 the first issue of a new English newspaper '' Ceylon Chronicle'' was published. George Henry Lee
George Henry Lee was a department store located in Liverpool, England, and became part of the John Lewis group. Early history In 1853 George Henry Lee and his brother, Henry Boswell Lee Junior opened a Bonnet warehouse on Basnett Street. The brothers had learned their trade under their father, Henry Boswell Lee who was the owner of a famous Liverpool Silk business operating out of multiple sites in the city. George and his brother grew the business quickly into a department store, becoming an exclusive shop with customers being led to the departments they wanted to shop at by Shop Walkers. However the brothers’ business acumen was poor, so they employed an experienced buyer in Thomas Oakshott to manage their growing business from 1861. Thomas eventually took over as the business partner from Henry Boswell, and solely ran the business from 1874 after George's retirement. George Augustus Lee
George Augustus Lee (1761 – 5 August 1826) was a British industrialist. His cotton mill in Salford was an early iron-framed building, and he pioneered the use of steam power and gas lighting in industry. Early life He was the only son of the actor-manager John Lee. The authors Sophia Lee and Harriet Lee were his sisters. In the 1780s he was a clerk at Peter Drinkwater's cotton mill in Northwich in Cheshire. In 1791 Drinkwater appointed him as manager of Piccadilly Mill, a new cotton mill in Manchester. He left the following year, to be managing partner in the mill in Salford owned by George and John Philips, Peter Atherton and Charles Wood. The company was later known as Philips and Lee. George Washington Lee (January 4, 1894 – August 1, 1976) was an African-American soldier, writer, political leader and corporate executive. Born in Heathman, Mississippi in 1894, Lee spent most of his life in Memphis, Tennessee. Lee received numerous citations for his benevolence and civic initiatives. Life and career Lee's parents, the Reverend George and Hattie Stringfellow, separated before his birth, and George and his brother Abner were raised by their mother, who worked as a sharecropper. Hattie Lee soon moved the family to nearby Indianola, Mississippi, a more populated and prosperous community. As a boy, Lee obtained summer employment at a grocery store in Indianola, but was subsequently fired by the white owner who was pressured by white patrons to hire white staff. George Henry Lee I, 2nd Earl of Lichfield (1690–1743) was a younger son of Edward Henry Lee, 1st Earl of Lichfield and his wife Charlotte Fitzroy, an illegitimate daughter of Charles II by his mistress, the celebrated courtesan Barbara Villiers. On 14 July 1716 George Henry Lee succeeded his father as the 2nd Earl of Lichfield. Birth and origins George was born on 12 March 1690 in St. James Park, London. George Washington Custis Lee (September 16, 1832 – February 18, 1913), also known as Custis Lee, was the eldest son of Robert E. Lee and Mary Anna Custis Lee. George Hay Lee (1807 – November 20, 1873) was a Virginia lawyer and politician who served on the Virginia Court of Appeals from 1852 until Virginia declared secession in 1861. Early and family life Born in Winchester, Virginia in 1807 to one of the First Families of Virginia. Lee attended the University of Virginia in 1827-28 and studied law under Judge Henry St. George Tucker at Winchester Law School in Winchester. He married twice and had six children, three daughters and three sons. Career Lee crossed the Appalachian mountains and began his legal practice in Clarksburg, West Virginia, the seat of what was then Harrison County, Virginia, in 1831.
