George Klein (DJ)
George "GK" Klein (October 8, 1935 – February 5, 2019) was an American DJ and television host. He met Elvis Presley in the eighth grade at Humes High School in North Memphis and they remained friends until Presley's death in 1977. Early life George Klein was born October 8, 1935, in Memphis, Tennessee to immigrant parents, a Russian Jewish mother and Polish Jewish father who had both fled antisemitism in Europe. He grew up in an observant Orthodox Jewish home. He met Elvis Presley when both were 13 years old in the eighth grade in 1948 at Humes High School. "Elvis was the only kid in school that could sing," said Klein. "I was really lucky because his mother liked me." Others argue at the time it was Elvis who was the lucky one. "That's All Right" is a song written and originally performed by blues singer Arthur Crudup and recorded in 1946. The song was rereleased in early March 1949 under the title "That's All Right, Mama", which was issued as RCA's first rhythm and blues record on its new 45 rpm single format. "That's All Right" is best known as the debut single recorded and released by Elvis Presley. Presley's version was recorded on July 5, 1954, and released on July 19, 1954, with "Blue Moon of Kentucky" as the B-side. The Memphis Mafia was the nickname given by the media to a group of Elvis Presley's friends, associates, employees and cousins whose main functions were to accompany, protect, and serve Presley from the beginning of his career in 1954 until his death in 1977. Several members filled practical roles; for instance, they were employed to work for Presley as bodyguards or on tour logistics and scheduling.
