George Albert Kerr
George Albert Kerr (January 27, 1924 – May 21, 2007) was a politician in Ontario, Canada. He served in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1963 to 1985, and was a cabinet minister in the governments of John Robarts and Bill Davis. Kerr was a member of the Progressive Conservative Party and was the first person to hold the portfolio of environment minister in any provincial or federal cabinet in Canada. Background He was born in Montreal, Quebec, and educated at the University of New Brunswick and Dalhousie Law School. He worked as a lawyer. Politics He served on the town council of Burlington, Ontario, from 1955 to 1957 and from 1960 to 1962. George Kerr (1853–1930) was an Australian politician, grazier, and blacksmith. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Kerr was born on 7 February 1853 at Beadnell, Northumberland, England and after training to become a blacksmith moved to Queensland in 1877. He became a mining speculator on the Croydon goldfields and then set up his own forge in Tambo, Queensland to service mining operations in the local region. Politics Kerr became involved in local politics for the Labor, and in 1893 he was elected to represent the electoral district of Barcoo in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland and served in that post until 1909. He rose to senior positions within the party, culminating in his election as leader of the Queensland Parliamentary Labor Party in 1904 after the death of his predecessor William Browne. Marlborough is a former New Zealand parliamentary electorate, in the Marlborough region at the top of the South Island. It existed from 1938 to 1996, and was represented by five Members of Parliament. Population centres The 1931 New Zealand census had been cancelled due to the Great Depression, so the 1937 electoral redistribution had to take ten years of population growth into account. The increasing population imbalance between the North and South Islands had slowed, and only one electorate seat was transferred from south to north. George Kerr (UK Politician)
George Kerr (died 12 February 1942) was a Scottish politician and trade unionist. Born in Glasgow, Kerr became involved in the Clarion socialist movement. He was secretary of the Glasgow Clarion Scouts for ten years, and in 1900 became an advance agent for the Clarion Van movement. He joined the Independent Labour Party in 1894, and in 1906 became the first full-time organiser of its Scottish Divisional Council. From 1910, he began solely organising the Glasgow district of the party. Kerr was also active in the Workers' Union, acting as a volunteer organiser. At the end of 1911, he was appointed as its first full-time organiser for Scotland. At the time, the union had only 250 members in Scotland, but by 1914, he had increased its membership to 9,000, mostly in Glasgow, and in 1915 it was made one of the first eight divisions of the union. George Kerr (February 14, 1919 – January 23, 1983) was an American football player and later a member of the catholic clergy of Boston. College football The "Righteous Reject", as he was called at Boston College, Kerr was an All-East and All-American guard. Upon arriving on campus, George reported to BC coach, Gil Dobie, wearing three sweaters and two overcoats to boost his 155 pounds to 180 after he was told he was too small for college football. Kerr surprised everyone when he excelled as an offensive guard, receiving All-American mention. Frank Leahy later called Kerr the greatest scholar-athlete he ever coached. Kerr was a member of the Eagles 1941 Sugar Bowl championship team where his performance against the University of Tennessee earned him a place on the All-Time Sugar Bowl team. George Adams McDonald Kerr (born 9 January 1943 in Alexandria) is a Scottish former association football player and manager. As a player, he scored 79 goals from 379 appearances in the Football League playing for Barnsley, Bury, Oxford United and Scunthorpe United. As a manager, he took charge of Lincoln City twice, Grimsby Town, Rotherham United and Boston United. Playing career After being spotted playing for the Renton Select junior side in Scotland, Kerr joined Barnsley aged just 17. Following brief spells at Bury and Oxford United, Kerr found his home at Scunthorpe United under the guidance of manager Ron Ashman. His then-teammate Kevin Keegan later remembered how "George was a tough, experienced Scot who knew how to handle himself." George Kerr, CBE (born 24 Aug 1937) is a Scottish judo expert. In 1957, he won the gold medal in the European Judo Championships in Rotterdam. In 2002 he was named one of the inaugural members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame. In 2001 he became president of the British Judo Association. In 2010 he was awarded the grade ''10th Dan'' by the International Judo Federation (IJF) for international services to judo. Having been preceded by Frenchman Henri Courtine (2007) and followed by Japanese American Yoshihiro Uchida (2014) and Italian Franco Capelletti (2017), Kerr currently is one of only four living IJF '' jūdan''. He is the second Briton after Charles Palmer to have gained this rank in Judo. George Ezekiel Kerr (16 October 1937 – 15 June 2012) was a Jamaican athlete who competed in the 400 and 800 metres. He competed for the British West Indies at the 1960 Summer Olympics, where he won the bronze medal in the 800 metres. He then teamed up with Keith Gardner, Malcolm Spence and James Wedderburn to win the bronze medal in the 4×400 metres relay. In 1962, he became the first Jamaican athlete to have the national flag flown in recognition of winning a gold when he won double gold in the 400 m and 800 m at the Central American and Caribbean Games held at Kingston's National Stadium. At the 1964 Olympics, representing Jamaica, he finished fourth both in the 800 m and the 4 × 400 m relay.
