George Jackson (British Army Officer)
Major-General George Hanbury Noble Jackson (20 December 1876 – 4 September 1958) was a British Army officer. Military career Educated at Neuenhein College, Heidelberg and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Jackson was commissioned into the Border Regiment on 20 February 1897. He saw action at the Relief of Ladysmith and the Battle of Spion Kop in January 1900 and at the Battle of the Tugela Heights in February 1900 in South Africa during the Second Boer War. He served initially as a staff officer and then as commander of the 87th Infantry Brigade from January 1918 during the First World War. The Battle of Spioen Kop ( nl, Slag bij Spionkop; af, Slag van Spioenkop) was a military engagement between British forces and two Boer Republics, the South African Republic and the Orange Free State, during the campaign by the British to relieve the besieged city Ladysmith during the initial months of the Second Boer War. The battle was fought 23–24 January 1900 on the hilltop of Spioen Kop (1), about west-southwest of Ladysmith. It resulted in a Boer victory. The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725. The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for appointing a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as "Knights of the Bath". George I "erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order". He did not (as is commonly believed) revive the Order of the Bath, since it had never previously existed as an Order, in the sense of a body of knights who were governed by a set of statutes and whose numbers were replenished when vacancies occurred. Major-General George Charles Kelly (October 1880 – April 1938) was a British Army officer. Military career Educated at Wellington College, Berkshire and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Kelly was commissioned into the King's Royal Rifle Corps on 11 November 1899. He was severely wounded at the Battle of the Tugela Heights in South Africa in February 1900 during the Second Boer War. During the First World War he served as commanding officer of the 2nd Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps from September 1917 to March 1918 when he became commander of the 2nd Infantry Brigade. He led his brigade in the German spring offensive and Hundred Days Offensive, during which he was wounded again in September 1918.
