George Hume (politician)
Sir George Hopwood Hume (24 May 1866 – 13 September 1946) was a British Conservative politician and leader of the London County Council. He was born in the Ukrainian city of Poltava, then in the Russian Empire. His father was George Hume, a Scottish mechanical engineer, and British vice consul at Kiev and Kharkov. He was educated in Russia, Switzerland and at the Finsbury Technical College, London. He was apprenticed as an electrical engineer at Siemens Brothers, later studying law and was called to the bar at the Middle Temple in 1900. In 1901, he married Jeanne Alice Ladrierre of Lausanne, who died in 1922. Political career Greenwich Borough Council Hume entered politics in November 1900 when he was elected to the newly constituted Greenwich Borough Council as a member of the Conservative-backed Moderate grouping. George Sherwood Hume
George Sherwood Hume (March 1, 1893 – November 24, 1965) was a Canadian geologist. Born in Milton, Ontario, Hume was a graduate of the University of Toronto. After serving in World War I, he received a PhD from Yale University in 1920. He joined the Geological Survey of Canada and became its Chief in 1947. He was later Director-General of Scientific Services in the Department of Mines and Resources. After retiring in 1956, he worked at Westcoast Transmission in Calgary. He was president of the Geological Association of Canada from 1952 to 1953, president of the Royal Society of Canada from 1955 to 1956, and president of the Geological Society of America The Geological Society of America (GSA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the advancement of the geosciences. George Shuldham Hume (4 March 1800 – 25 November 1872) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Cambridge University in two matches in 1821, totalling 165 runs with a highest score of 97 not out. Hume was educated at Eton College and King's College, Cambridge. George Steuart Hume, also known as ''George Home'', (1747 – 1787/1788) was a Maryland physician and landowner who emigrated to Scotland before the American Revolutionary War. Born George Hume Steuart in Maryland, he left for Scotland in 1758, where he studied medicine, changing his name to his maternal name of Hume in order to inherit his family's substantial Scottish estates.Nelker, 24 Early life Hume was born in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, in 1747, the eldest son of planter and physician George Hume Steuart (1700–1784), and Anne Digges. Sir George Hume, 1st Baronet (), of Castle Hume, Fermanagh, was a landowner and baronet of Scottish descent. He was the elder son of Sir John Hume of North Berwick, Scotland and the grandson of Patrick Hume of Polwarth, Scotland. He succeeded to a large estate in Fermanagh granted to his father by the king and was created a baronet, of North Berwick in the Baronetage of Nova Scotia in 1671. He also inherited Tully Castle (also known as Castle Hume), built by his father. He died in Edinburgh and was succeeded by his son Sir John Hume, 2nd Baronet.
