George Hicks (trade Unionist)
Ernest George Hicks (13 May 1879 β 19 July 1954) was a British trades unionist and Labour Party politician. Hicks was born in 1879 in Vernhams Dean, Hampshire. Along with fellow bricklayers Jack Fitzgerald and F. K. Cadman, he was one of the founding members of the Socialist Party of Great Britain in June 1904. Hicks resigned on 20 August 1904, rejoining on 14 December 1908 and finally leaving around 1910. He does not seem to have played an active part in the life of the Party, but after leaving it went on to be a prominent trade union leader in the bricklayers' union. Hicks first came to prominence during the great labour unrest just before the First World War, particularly in the London building trades lockout of 1914. He was a well-known syndicalist agitator at this time, being linked with Tom Mannβs Industrial Syndicalist Education League and its effective successor the Industrial Democracy League. George Hicks (footballer)
George Wolstenholme Hicks (30 April 1902 β 21 February 1954) was an English professional footballer who played as an outside left. He made 231 appearances in the Football League playing for Manchester City, Birmingham, Swindon Town and Rotherham United. Life and career Hicks was born in Salford in 1902. He played youth football with Salford Lads' Club before joining Manchester-based Clayton and then Droylsden, from where he signed for Manchester City in November 1923. He played for City in the 1926 FA Cup Final and contributed to them winning the Second Division championship in the 1927β28 season. He signed for First Division club Birmingham in October 1928, and scored 12 league goals in what remained of that season. Early in the 1930β31 season he sustained a serious knee injury. George Elgar Hicks (13 March 1824 – 1914) was an English painter during the Victorian era. He is best known for his large genre paintings, which emulate William Powell Frith in style, but was also a society portraitist. Biography Born on 13 March 1824 in Lymington, Hampshire, George Elgar Hicks was the second son of a wealthy magistrate. His parents encouraged Hicks to become a doctor and so Hicks studied medicine at University College from 1840 to 1842. However, after three years' "ardous and disagreeable study" Hicks decided he wanted to be an artist. Lieutenant George Rensbury Hicks (24 January 1900 β 24 November 1951) was a First World War flying ace credited with eight aerial victories. Biography Hicks was born in Walthamstow, Essex, to George and Matilda Ann Hicks on 24 January 1900. During the First World War, Hicks served with the Artists Rifles as a private up until 3 November 1917, when he joined the Royal Flying Corps as a lieutenant. Posted to No. 74 (Fighter) Squadron, Hicks achieved all eight of his victories in the Royal Aircraft Factory S.E.5a. Hicks scored his first victory on 15 July 1918, shooting down a Fokker D.VII. His second triumph came on 24 July, this time against a DFW C.V. Hicks shot down another DFW C.V on 19 August. Biography Hicks, eldest son of solicitor Christopher Hicks, was born in Shrewsbury on 14 September 1862 and educated at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford He initially went on to study law within his father's legal practice.
