George Hewston (actor)
George Hewston (September 11, 1826 – September 4, 1891) was an American politician, educator, and physician. He was appointed the 16th Mayor of San Francisco upon the death of James Otis. He was sworn in on November 4, 1875, and served until December 5, 1875. Biography Hewston was born on September 11, 1826 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He apprenticed himself to a physician and then took a medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Medicine and the University of Pennsylvania. He moved with his family to San Francisco to escape the American Civil War. Hewston established a new medical practice upon his arrival, supplementing his income by lecturing at the Toland College of Medicine (later known as University of California, San Francisco). His skill at lecturing brought him to the attention of the People's Party, which nominated him for San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1873. James Otis (August 11, 1826 – October 30, 1875) was an American politician. He was active in San Francisco, where he served as mayor from 1873 to 1875. Biography James Otis was born in Boston, Massachusetts to the Otis family, which is counted among the Boston Brahmin families. He was the grandson of James Otis Jr. of the American Revolutionary War. He moved to San Francisco, California for the 1849 California Gold Rush. He was a prominent member of the First Unitarian Church of San Francisco. In 1858, Otis married Lucy Hamilton Macondray, together they had two daughters and five sons. Otis then became an importer and exporter in San Francisco, working at his father-in-law Frederick William Macondray's business Macondray and Company. Masonic Cemetery (San Francisco, California)
Lone Mountain Cemetery was a complex of cemeteries in the Lone Mountain neighborhood of San Francisco, California on the land bounded by the present-day California Street, Geary Boulevard, Parker Avenue, and Presidio Avenue. Opened 1854, it eventually comprised Laurel Hill Cemetery, Calvary Cemetery, the Masonic Cemetery, and Odd Fellows Cemetery. Pressure to close the complex began around the beginning of the twentieth century, and by 1941 all remains within it had been moved elsewhere, mostly to a new necropolis in Colma, California, though some were never accounted for.
