George Herzog
George Herzog (October 19, 1851 – September 16, 1920) was an American interior designer and decorative painter, best known for his work on Philadelphia Masonic Temple. Career Born in Munich to German landscape painter Hermann Ottomar Herzog, he trained under the ornamental painter Joseph Schwarzmann, and at Munich's Royal Academy of Arts. His family immigrated to the United States in 1871. He became a partner in the Philadelphia decorating firm of Otto & Konstantine Kaiser in 1873, and assumed management of the firm in 1874, following the Kaisers' deaths. His work received prizes at the 1876 Centennial Exposition for upholstery design and fresco painting. He specialized in ceiling and wall decoration, and sometimes oil portraiture. James Gamble Rogers
James Gamble Rogers (March 3, 1867 – October 1, 1947) was an American architect. A proponent of what came to be known as Collegiate Gothic architecture, he is best known for his academic commissions at Yale University, Columbia University, Northwestern University, and elsewhere. Biography Rogers was born in Bryan Station, Kentucky, on March 3, 1867, to James M. and Katharine Gamble Rogers. Rogers attended Yale University, where he contributed to ''The Yale Record'' and was a member of the senior society Scroll and Key, whose membership included several other notable architects. He received his B.A. in 1889, and is responsible for many of the gothic revival structures at Yale University built in the 1910s through the mid-1930s, as well as the university's master plan in 1924. The Liederkranz of New York City is an organization devoted to cultural and social exchange as well as the sponsorship of musical events. Its activities are dedicated to the support, development and preservation of culture in New York City. Its objective once was to enhance German-American relations. Girard College is an independent college preparatory five-day boarding school located on a 43-acre campus in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The school was founded and permanently endowed from the shipping and banking fortune of Stephen Girard upon his death in 1831. Girard College enrolls academically capable students, grades one through twelve, and awards a full scholarship with a yearly value of approximately $63,000 to every child admitted. Jews in Philadelphia can trace their history back to Colonial America. Jews have lived in Philadelphia since the arrival of William Penn in 1682. Colonial History Jewish traders have operated in southeastern Pennsylvania since at least the 1650s. The first Jewish resident of the city on record was Jonas Aaron whose name appears in 1703 in the ''American Historical Register''. Several Jewish families had immigrated to Philadelphia by 1734, as recorded by German traveler von Beck who listed them among the religious sects of the town. Nathan Levy purchased ground for Jewish burial in 1738, obtained the grant on September 25, 1740, and is cared for by Congregation Mikveh Israel. William Lukens Elkins
William Lukens Elkins (May 2, 1832 – November 7, 1903) was an American businessman and art collector. He began his working career as a grocer in Philadelphia and became a business tycoon with financial interests in oil, natural gas and transportation. He was one of the first to convert oil to gasoline and became a major shareholder in Standard Oil. He partnered with Peter Widener to found the Philadelphia Rapid Transit Company and developed streetcar and railway systems throughout several major cities in the United States. He founded the United Gas Improvement Company and was a member of the board of directors of 24 companies. He was a collector of art and filled his Elkins Estate with over 132 paintings.
