George Henry Warne
George Henry Warne (15 December 1881 – 24 December 1928) was a British Labour Party politician. Born in Cramlington in Northumberland, Warne began working in a coal mine at the age of twelve. He became active in the Northumberland Miners' Association, and was elected as one of its trustees. He was also president of the Northumberland and Durham Miners' Approved Society. Warne was a supporter of the Labour Party, and was elected to Ashington Urban District Council in 1907, chairing it from 1919 to 1921. In 1919, he was also elected to Northumberland County Council. At the 1922 general election, he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Wansbeck constituency in Northumberland, which had previously been held by a Liberal. The Labour Party is a political party in the United Kingdom that has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. Robert Mason (Liberal Politician)
Robert Mason (17 December 1857 – 1 August 1927) was a British Liberal Party politician. Family Mason was born at Belford in Northumberland. In 1884, he married Rosa Elizabeth Thompson and they had two sons and three daughters. Their home was Marden House in Whitley Bay. Career Mason was a shipping agent and shipowner by profession. He was also an Alderman of Northumberland County Council and a Justice of the Peace. Politics Mason was selected to fight the Wansbeck constituency at a by-election on 28 May 1918 as a supporter of the Coalition government of David Lloyd George. He was opposed by Ebenezer "Ebby Edwards" for the Labour Party and won the seat by a majority of 547 votes. He stood again as a Coalition Liberal at the 1918 general election having presumably been awarded the Coalition coupon. George Shield
George William Shield (24 March 1876 – 1 December 1935) was a British Labour Party politician. Born in Coanwood,Northumberland, Shield became a coal miner before winning election as a checkweighman. A supporter of the Labour Party, he was elected to Northumberland County Council, and also served as a magistrate. At the 1922 general election, he stood unsuccessfully in the Conservative-held Hexham constituency in Northumberland; finishing in third place with a 24% share of the vote. The 1929 Wansbeck by-election was a by-election held on 13 February 1929 for the British House of Commons constituency of Wansbeck. Vacancy The by-election was triggered by the death of the constituency's Labour Party Member of Parliament (MP) George Warne, who had held the seat since the 1922 general election. Candidates The local Liberal association had selected 39 year-old Harry Anson Briggs as their prospective candidate in 1928. Briggs had stood for the Liberals in the 1923 general election at Sheffield Attercliffe and in the 1924 general election at Buckrose. He was educated at Sheffield Secondary School and Sheffield University.
