George Henry Murray
George Henry Murray (June 7, 1861 – January 6, 1929) was a Nova Scotia politician who served as the eighth premier of Nova Scotia for 26 years and 188 days, the longest unbroken tenure for a head of government in Canadian history. Early life and career Murray was born in Grand Narrows, Nova Scotia. He was a member of the North British Society. Despite his later political longevity, Murray's early political career was marked by inability to get elected. He lost five consecutive elections at the federal and provincial level before he finally won a seat. Despite his electoral failures he was highly regarded within the Nova Scotia Liberal Party and was nominated by Nova Scotia Premier William Stevens Fielding as his successor after Fielding left provincial politics in 1896 to join the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. William Stevens Fielding
William Stevens Fielding, (November 24, 1848 – June 23, 1929) was a Canadian Liberal politician, the seventh premier of Nova Scotia (1884–96), and the federal Minister of Finance from 1896 to 1911 and again from 1921 to 1925. Early life He was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Fielding became leader of the Anti-Confederation Party (Nova Scotia Liberal Party). In 1884, he became Premier and won the 1886 election on a pledge to remove Nova Scotia from confederation. When he failed to do this, he turned to economic matters including developing the coal industry. The Liberal Party of Nova Scotia fared poorly in national elections during the 1880s and early 1890s. The national party advocated policies that would discontinue the national coal subsidy and, for all practical purposes, eliminate Catholic schools in Manitoba, policies disliked by provincial coal miners and Catholics respectively. Angus Gladstone Buchanan
Angus Gladstone Buchanan (August 24, 1893 – September 12, 1960) was a fish merchant and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Victoria County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1920 to 1925 as a Liberal member. He was born in Neil Harbour, Nova Scotia, the son of Angus A. Buchanan and Mary Isabel McLeod. Buchanan was educated at the Halifax Academy and McGill University. In 1922, he married Katherine MacLeod. Buchanan later served as chief warden for Cape Breton Highlands National Park. He lived at Neil's Harbour, later residing at Ingonish Beach within the National Park. Sir Henri Charles Wilfrid Laurier, ( ; ; November 20, 1841 – February 17, 1919) was a Canadian lawyer, statesman, and politician who served as the seventh prime minister of Canada from 1896 to 1911. North British Society
The North British Society (also known as "The Scots" and "Scots Club") was founded in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1768, the oldest Scottish heritage society outside Great Britain. North British is an adjective used as an alternative to "Scottish". History The Society was established "for the benefit of ourselves and assistance of each other, who may be afflicted with disease or any other casualty or misfortune." Grand Narrows ( gd, An Caolas Mór) (2001 population 15) is a community in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality in Nova Scotia, Canada.
