George Haworth
George Haworth (17 October 1864 – 5 January 1943) was an English footballer, who helped Blackburn Rovers win the FA Cup in 1885. He also made five appearances for England. Playing career Haworth was born in Accrington and played for Christ Church FC as a teenager from 1878 and in 1882 he was playing for Accrington. Haworth went on loan to Preston North End FC. In 1884 he was on loan to Blackburn Rovers and was a member of their team which won the FA Cup in 1885. The 1885 FA Cup Final was played at the Oval on 4 April against Scottish team Queen's Park, who were hoping to gain revenge for their defeat, in somewhat controversial circumstances, the previous year. This time there was little controversy and it was soon clear that Rovers were the superior side, even though Queens Park fielded six players who had appeared in the England v. Accrington
Accrington is a town in the Hyndburn borough of Lancashire, England. It lies about east of Blackburn, west of Burnley, east of Preston, north of Manchester and is situated on the culverted River Hyndburn. Walter Arnott
Walter Arnott (12 May 1861 – 18 May 1931), sometimes known as Wattie Arnott, was a Scottish footballer who played for Queen's Park and the Scotland national team. Football career Born in Pollokshields (then in Renfrew County but in the parish of Govan), Arnott joined Queen's Park from Pollokshields Athletic in 1882 as a replacement for Andrew Watson and remained with the Glasgow club until 1893. However, as an amateur he was free to play for other clubs, including Kilmarnock, Newcastle West End, Notts County, Third Lanark and Corinthian. He also coached the young players at Queen's Park, initially retiring from playing in 1888 before being persuaded to return. At Queen's Park, he won the Scottish Cup three times in 1884, 1886 and 1890, gaining additional medals in the Glasgow Cup and Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup, typically partnered by Andrew Holm and later by Bob Smellie. The Football League
The English Football League (EFL) is a league of professional football clubs from England and Wales. Founded in 1888 as the Football League, the league is the oldest such competition in the world. It was the top-level football league in England from its foundation until 1992, when the top 22 clubs split from it to form the Premier League. The 1888–89 season was the 18th season of competitive association football in England. Overview A new competition, The Football League, started this season. The Football League was open to clubs all over the United Kingdom, but the first twelve entrants (Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke (now Stoke City), West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers) were all from the Midlands or North of England (in later years the competition became the de facto English league, though some clubs from outside England still compete in it). Blackburn () is an industrial town and the administrative centre of the Blackburn with Darwen borough in Lancashire, England. William Nevill Cobbold (4 February 1863 – 8 April 1922), familiarly known as Nevill or "Nuts" Cobbold, was one of the leading footballers of the Victorian era and on several occasions a member of the England national football team. Fred Dewhurst
Frederick Dewhurst (16 December 1863 – 21 April 1895) was an English professional footballer, who played as an inside forward for Preston North End in the late 19th century. Dewhurst was the first North End player to play representative football for Lancashire when he took part in the game against London for the benefit of the Moorfield Colliery Relief Fund. He was a schoolmaster at the Catholic college in Preston and one of its first secretaries. As a player, he was renowned for testing his physical prowess against rival goalkeepers. Prior to the inauguration of the Football League, North End were anxious to prove their worth against the Corinthians. Tinsley Lindley
Dr. Tinsley Lindley OBE (27 October 1865 – 31 March 1940) was an English footballer. He was described as "an ideal centre forward". He scored three goals in his debut aged 16 for Nottingham Forest.
