George Hancock (Virginia Politician)
George Hancock (June 13, 1754July 18, 1820) was an American planter and lawyer from Virginia. He represented Virginia as a Federalist in the U.S. House from 1793 to 1797. Biography He was born in Chesterfield County in the Colony of Virginia to George and Mary (Jones) Hancock. George Hancock was appointed a colonel in the Virginia militia, where he served as aide de camp to Count Casimir Pulaski. When General Pulaski was mortally wounded at the battle of Savannah, it was Colonel Hancock that pulled the general off of his horse. George Hancock married Margaret Strother in 1781. It was in that year that Hancock purchased 300 acres in and around Fincastle, Virginia, that was to become Santillane. Work began in 1795 on Santillane using George Hancock's slaves. The exterior was completed around 1800 using bricks fired on site. The interior was probably completed a couple of years later. Rear Admiral George Hancock (1819 – 20 September 1876) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Pacific Station. Naval career Hancock joined the Royal Navy in 1834. As a Commander he was regarded as an innovator in medical matters and insisted that the ship's surgeon had his own cabin. Promoted to captain in 1855, he was given command of HMS Immortalité, HMS Trafalgar, HMS Duncan __NOTOC__ Seven Royal Navy ships have been named HMS ''Duncan'', after Admiral Adam Duncan, 1st Viscount Duncan of Camperdown, hero of the Battle of Camperdown. * Carron (1792 ship), HMS ''Duncan'' (1804) was the mercantile ''Carron'', launched at ... and HMS Duke of Wellington. George Hancock (softball)
George Hancock, at the time a reporter for Chicago Board of Trade, invented the game of softball in 1887. The first game was played, inside the Farragut Boat Club in Chicago.The Farragut Boat Club is mentioned in a news item that appeared later. See: The first game of softball came from a football game between Yale and Harvard. When it was announced that Yale had won, Yale alumni, in excitement, threw a boxing glove at a Harvard supporter. The Harvard supporter playfully swung at it as spectators looked on in interest. George Hancock shouted, "Let's play ball," and tied the boxing glove into the shape of a ball. The men chalked a diamond shape onto the floor and broke a broom handle to serve as a bat. This is credited as the first softball game which was played on Thanksgiving Day November 24, 1887 after a Harvard-Yale football game that had been followed by telegraph. George Hancock (architect)
George Hancock (1849- 1924) was an architect active in North Dakota, Montana and Minnesota. Biography George David Hancock was born in the village of Uley in Gloucestershire, England. He was educated at South Kensington Institute in London, England. He moved to Dakota Territory in 1882, settling in Fargo, North Dakota with his brother Walter Benjamin Hancock (1863-1929), when they were 33 and 17, respectively. Walter Hancock attended Syracuse University where he graduated with a degree in architecture in 1889. After a fire destroyed much of Downtown Fargo in 1893, George and Walter designed around half of the replacement buildings. After advocating for a 1917 law requiring architects in North Dakota to be licensed, he and Walter became the first two licensed architects in the state. George Allan Hancock
George Allan Hancock (July 26, 1875 – May 31, 1965) was the owner of the Rancho La Brea Oil Company. He inherited Rancho La Brea, including the La Brea Tar Pits which he donated to Los Angeles County. He also developed Hancock Park, Los Angeles. He was vice president of the Los Angeles Hibernian Bank, treasurer of the Los Angeles Symphony Association, and president of the Automobile Association of Southern California. He owned the Santa Maria Valley Railroad, established Rosemary Farm, and developed the Santa Maria Ice and Cold Storage Plant. Biography Captain G. Allan Hancock was born in San Francisco, California, on July 26, 1875. He was the son of Major Henry Hancock and Ida Haraszthy Hancock (Ida Hancock Ross).
