George Gross Memorial Trophy
The George Gross Memorial Trophy is awarded to the most valuable player of the Canadian Championship. It is named after George Gross, a highly respected sports journalist who covered soccer for the ''Toronto Telegram'' and ''Toronto Sun''. The inaugural recipient of the Trophy was Matt Jordan of the Montreal Impact, who was named MVP of the 2008 Canadian Soccer Championship after posting two clean sheets and only allowing two goals in four games, en route to Montreal's tournament victory. Dwayne De Rosario became the first Canadian winner of the Trophy in 2009 after scoring three goals in a 6–1 Toronto FC victory over Montreal in the final game of that year's tournament. Most Valuable Player
In team sports, a most valuable player award, abbreviated 'MVP award', is an honor typically bestowed upon an individual (or individuals, in the instance of a tie) whose individual performance is the greatest in an entire league, for a particular competition, or on a specific team. The purpose of the award is recognize the contribution of the individual's efforts amongst a group effort, and to highlight the excellence, exemplariness, and/or outstandingness of a player's performance amidst the performance of their peers in question. CF Montréal is a Canadian professional soccer club based in Montréal, Québec, Canada. The club competes in Major League Soccer (MLS) in the Eastern Conference. 2009 Canadian Championship
The 2009 Canadian Championship (officially the Nutrilite Canadian Championship for sponsorship reasons) was a soccer tournament hosted and organized by the Canadian Soccer Association that took place in the cities of Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver in 2009. It is the second Canadian Championship held, after the inaugural competition in 2008. As in the previous tournament, participating teams were the Montreal Impact, Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The tournament consisted of a home and away series between each pair of teams for a total of six games. Toronto FC, winners of the tournament, were awarded the Voyageurs Cup and gained entry into the Preliminary Round of the 2009–10 CONCACAF Champions League. Montreal Impact (1992–2011)
The Montreal Impact (french: Impact de Montréal) was a Canadian professional association football, soccer club based in Montreal, Quebec. Founded in 1993, the team played in the United Soccer League. Later, the Impact played in the North American Soccer League (2011), North American Soccer League (NASL), the second tier of the American Soccer Pyramid until the 2011 season. The owner Joey Saputo now operates the Major League Soccer, MLS team CF Montréal, which also carried the Montreal Impact name until 2021. The team played its home games at Complexe Sportif Claude-Robillard until 2008 when it moved to the new Saputo Stadium where it played until its move to MLS. The team's colours were blue and white. 2008 Canadian Championship
The 2008 Canadian Championship (officially the Nutrilite Canadian Championship for sponsorship reasons) was the first edition of the Canadian Championship – Canada's domestic cup competition. The soccer tournament took place in the cities of Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver from May to July, 2008. The tournament consisted of a home and away series between each team for a total of six games. Participating teams were the Montreal Impact, Toronto FC, and the Vancouver Whitecaps. The winner of the tournament, Montreal, gained entry into the qualifying round of the 2008–09 CONCACAF Champions League, where they played against the Nicaraguan representative Real Estelí in a home and away series to determine entrance to the group stages. Russell James Teibert (born December 22, 1992) is a Canadian professional soccer player currently playing as a midfielder for Vancouver Whitecaps FC in Major League Soccer and formerly for the Canada national team. Club career Youth and amateur Teibert attended St. Paul High School (Ontario) in Niagara Falls, Ontario, and is of German and Italian descent. Justin Mapp
Justin Mapp (born October 18, 1984) is an American former soccer player who played as a midfielder. Mapp has been described as being versatile and known for possessing "speed and creative abilities from out wide, but also his ability to drift inside and generate offense." Career Professional Mapp graduated from the Bradenton Academy in 2001 and signed with MLS as a Project-40 player. He was drafted by D.C. United with the fourth overall pick in the 2002 MLS SuperDraft, but played only 28 minutes for DC in his first year as a pro. The Chicago Fire acquired Mapp for Dema Kovalenko before the 2003 season, and he has been an important player in the squad since, helping them to the 2003 US Open Cup.
