George Gregory (cricketer)
George Robert Gregory (27 August 1878 – 28 November 1958) was an English first-class cricketer who played for Derbyshire intermittently between 1899 and 1910. Gregory was born at Pilsley, Derbyshire, the son of George Gregory, an innkeeper of Pilsley, and his wife Mary. He made his debut for Derbyshire in the 1899 season in July against Leicestershire when he opened the batting in the only innings played. He next played for Derbyshire in two games in the 1901 season. His main season was in 1903 when he played eight matches and bowled regularly to take 12 wickets. His best bowling performance of 4 for 70 was against Surrey. In the 1904 season he played two matches, and then his next game was in the 1906 season. He finally played one match in the 1910 season. Gregory was a right-hand batsman and played 22 innings in 15 first-class matches with an average of 8.70 and a top score of 23. Pilsley, North East Derbyshire
Pilsley is a village and civil parish in the district of North East Derbyshire in the county of Derbyshire, England. It is located near to the town of Chesterfield. At the 2011 Census the population was 3,487. Pilsley has an Anglican church, St Mary's, an evangelical Methodist church, two primary schools, a post office and a Kingdom Hall building for Jehovah's Witnesses. Pilsley also has a Village Hall and St Mary's Centre (formerly the church hall). Recently a new sports centre (The Elm Centre) was built for the school which is also available for community use. A section of the Midland Main Line (Nottingham to Chesterfield section) runs along the western edge of the village. Derbyshire County Cricket Club in 1910 was the cricket season when the English club Derbyshire had been playing for thirty nine years. It was their sixteenth season in the County Championship and they won two matches to finish fifteenth in the Championship table. 1910 season Derbyshire played twenty two matches, all in the County Championship and won two and lost fourteen. Their two victories were courtesy of Leicestershire. John Chapman was in his first year as captain. Ernest Needham scored most runs, and Arthur Morton took most wickets. Among the draws, the season produced one of the most memorable matches against Warwickshire at Blackwell in 1910 and not just a Derbyshire record 9th wicket partnership, but a world record 9th wicket partnership of 283 which still stands.
