George Gray (Pennsylvania Politician)
George Gray (1725–1800) served as a member of the Pennsylvania Provincial Assembly and as its Speaker in 1783. His father, also named George Gray, had purchased 199 acres of land on both sides of the Schuylkill River in what was then Blockley Township (present-day West Philadelphia) and Moyamensing (present-day South Philadelphia). The elder Gray founded Gray's Ferry Tavern, Gray's Ferry Tavern and Inn on the western bank of the river and took over operation of Gray's Ferry Bridge, Gray's Ferry. In 1740, the father retired, leaving the businesses to his sons, Robert and 15-year-old George. In 1748, the younger George Gray became a lieutenant in Company Nine of the Associators, a volunteer militia. In 1772, Gray was elected to the Colonial government in the Thirteen Colonies, Colonial Assembly, and served through its transition to becoming the State Assembly in 1776. For two years in the World Wrestling Federation (WWF), he was Akeem "The African Dream". George Charles Gray (1897–1981) was an English cathedral organist, who served in Leicester Cathedral. Background Gray was born on 7 October 1897 in Nutfield. George Edward Kruger Gray (25 December 1880 – 2 May 1943) was an English artist, best remembered for his designs of coinage and stained glass windows. Personal life Kruger was born in 1880 at 126 Kensington Park Road, London, the son of a Jersey merchant, and was christened George Edward Kruger in Kensington. He attended Merchant Taylors' Boys' School, Crosby and in July 1893 was dramatically rescued from Crosby Beach by Eyton Owen, a schoolmaster of another school, during a tragic incident in which his older brother and their friend, all day boys at Merchant Taylors', were drowned. He received his tertiary education at the Bath School of Art (today Bath School of Art and Design a department of Bath Spa University). George Douglas Gray
Lt. Col. George Douglas Gray (1872 – 12 September 1946) was a Scottish physician who served in the British Army in what is now Malawi and later in what is now Kenya and then as the medical officer to the British ambassador in Peking (now Beijing), China, where he was also the medical superintendent to the British Charitable Hospital there. He assisted in combatting the plague epidemic of 1910–1911 for which he received the thanks of the Chinese government. He was subsequently the British delegate to the International Plague Conference held in Mukden in 1911. During the First World War, he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps as commanding officer of the hospitals for the Chinese Labour Corps at Noyelles-sur-Mer. In retirement, he wrote a book extolling the benefits of the soya bean which was influenced by his experiences in China. George Zabriskie Gray (July 14, 1837 – August 4, 1889) was a notable clergyman, educator and theologian of the Episcopal Church in the United States. Early life Gray was born in New York City on July 14, 1837. He was a son of Susan Maria (née Zabriskie) Gray (1814–1904) and John Alexander Clinton Gray (1815–1898), a dry goods merchant in New York City. His older brother was Albert Zabriskie Gray, warden of Racine College, and his younger brother was jurist John Clinton Gray and his sisters were Katharine Gray (wife of Hackley Bartholomew Bacon) and Frances Susan Gray. He was of French-Huguenot and Polish descent. George Seaman Gray (July 10, 1835 – August 26, 1885) was an American minister and author. Biography Gray, eldest son of John and Jane E. (Seaman) Gray, was born in New York City, July 10, 1835. He was prepared for College at the age of fourteen, but was then on account of his youth put into a business house for four years. He entered Yale College in February, 1854 and graduated in 1857. On leaving College he spent two years in the Auburn Theological Seminary at Auburn, N. Y , and a third year in Union Seminary, New York City. For a year he preached as a stated supply in the suburbs of Portland, Maine, and in the meantime married, May 1, 1861, Sarah Brown, the only daughter of Robert Brown, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and sister of a classmate. George Gray (painter)
George Gray (1758 – 9 December 1819) was an English painter. Biography Gray was born at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1758, was son of Gilbert Gray, a well-known quaker of that town. He was educated at the grammar school, and was first apprenticed to a fruit-painter named Jones, with whom he resided some time at York. Besides painting, Gray studied chemistry, mineralogy, and botany. In 1787 he went to North America on a botanical excursion, and in 1791 he was sent on an expedition to report on the geology of Poland. In 1794, Gray settled in Newcastle as a portrait, fruit, or sign painter, and was employed as a drawing-master. He also occupied himself with numerous ingenious inventions, such as making bread from roots and weaving stockings from nettles. Gray's humour and originality made him popular. Hawkhurst Gang
The Hawkhurst Gang was a notorious criminal organisation involved in smuggling throughout southeast England from 1735 until 1749. One of the more infamous gangs of the early 18th century, they extended their influence from Hawkhurst, their base in Kent, along the South coast, to Dorset, where they successfully raided the customs house at Poole. After they were defeated in a battle with the Goudhurst militia in 1747, two of their leaders, Arthur Gray and Thomas Kingsmill, were executed in 1748 and 1749. George James Pope Gray (7 July 1925 – 1995) was an English footballer who played in the Football League as a wing half for Grimsby Town, Swindon Town and Darlington. Life and career Gray was born in Sunderland, the son of George Gray and his wife Vera Lister. Gray senior played League football as a wing half for Swansea Town and Northampton Town in the 1920s, and went on to become trainer of Sunderland.
