George Girvan
George Girvan, often called Geordie Girvan (13 June 1878 – 3 July 1968), was a Scottish footballer who played as a forward for Spanish club FC Barcelona. He is best known for scoring the very first competitive goal in Barcelona's history at the 1900–01 Copa Macaya. Escocès FC George Girvan was born in Motherwell on 13 June 1878. He was one of many young Scottish workers at lace manufacturers Johnston, Shields & Co in Newmilns sent over to work in the company's newly opened factory at Sant Martí de Provençals, known in Catalonia as ''La Escocesa'', which started production back in 1893. At the start of 1900, whilst out in the Catalan capital, the 20-year-old George and his co-workers set up a football team to pass the time, calling it Escocès FC. Motherwell
Motherwell ( sco, Mitherwall, gd, Tobar na Màthar) is a town and former burgh in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, United Kingdom, south east of Glasgow. It has a population of around 32,120. Historically in the parish of Dalziel and part of Lanarkshire, Motherwell is the headquarters for North Lanarkshire Council. Geographically the River Clyde separates Motherwell from Hamilton to the west whereas the South Calder Water separates Motherwell from Carfin to the north-east and New Stevenston and Bellshill towards the north. Copa Macaya
The Hispania Athletic Club Tournament–Alfonso Macaya Cup, popularly known as the Copa Macaya, was a football competition contested by clubs from Catalonia which ran from 1900 until 1903, disappearing at the same time of its organizers, Hispania AC, who won the first edition in 1901. Initially, the championship was open to all Spanish clubs, thus some historians consider this cup to be the first national championship in Spain, as well as the predecessor and forerunner for the Catalan football championship which began in 1903. Until that point, the teams founded at the end of 1899 and during 1900 had been limited to playing friendly games only. It was one of the first football championships played on the Iberian Peninsula, after Taça D. Carlos I in Portugal (1894) and the Merchants Cup in Gibraltar (1895). Hampden Park (Scottish Gaelic: ''Pàirc Hampden''), often referred to as Hampden, is a football stadium in the Mount Florida area of Glasgow, Scotland. The -capacity venue serves as the national stadium of football in Scotland. 1901–02 Copa Macaya
The 1901–02 Copa Macaya was the 2nd staging of the Copa Macaya. This tournament is best known for being the very first trophy won by the Spanish club FC Barcelona. The competition was held on the road between 22 December 1901 and ended on 12 March 1902. Overview The previous edition of the competition had been won by Hispania AC, after beating Barcelona to the title by just two points. In the decisive game, Barcelona managed to score a winner against Hispania that would have forced a playoff for the title, but the goal was disallowed by the referee due to a supposed offside, a decision heavily protested by the Barça players, in vain. So in this second tournament, Barça was driven to claim the trophy and get some revenge along the way, and the first step they took was to sign Hispania's captain and best player at the tournament, Gustavo Green. Joan Gamper
Hans Max Gamper-Haessig (; 22 November 1877 – 30 July 1930), commonly known as Joan Gamper (), was a Swiss-born Association football, football executive and versatile athlete. He founded football clubs in Switzerland and Spain, most notably FC Barcelona and FC Zürich. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the amateur beginnings of FC Barcelona, being the fundamental head behind the foundation of the club in 1899, and then serving as the club's first Captain (association football), captain between 1899 and 1903, netting over 100 goals in just 48 matches for Barça and in 1902, he captained his side to a victory in the Copa Macaya, the club's very first title. John Parsons Alexander (14 April 1875 - 18 November 1960), was an Anglo-Spanish footballer who played as a forward for FC Barcelona. His younger brother, William, followed him every step through. Together with his brother, he is regarded as one of the most important figures in the amateur beginnings of football in Catalonia, taking part in some of the earliest Catalan clubs in existence such as '' Sociedad de Foot-Ball de Barcelona'', where he stood out as a great striker, netting some of the first goals in the history of Catalan football.
