George Frederick Davies
Major Sir George Frederick Davies, CVO (19 April 1875 – 21 June 1950) was a British Conservative Party politician. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Yeovil from 1923 to 1945. He was born in Honolulu in Hawaii, the son of Theophilus Harris Davies. He was educated at Uppingham School and then at King's College, Cambridge. During the First World War, he served in The Gloucestershire Regiment. He married in 1900, and had two sons and three daughters. He was briefly British vice-consul in Honolulu. Whilst in parliament, he became an assistant government whip in 1931, served as a Lord Commissioner of the Treasury from 1932 to 1935, Vice-Chamberlain of the Household 1935–37 and Comptroller of the Household 1937–38. He was one of the earliest members of the 1922 Committee. He was knighted in the 1936 King's Birthday Honours List. and appointed Commander of the Royal Victorian Order the next year. The 1923 Yeovil by-election was a parliamentary by-election for the British House of Commons constituency of Yeovil (UK Parliament constituency), Yeovil on 30 October 1923. Vacancy The by-election was caused by the death of the sitting Unionist Party (UK), Unionist Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), MP, Aubrey Herbert, Lt-Col. Hon. Aubrey Herbert on 26 September 1923. He had been MP here since winning the 1911 South Somerset by-election. Election history Before Herbert won South Somerset in 1911, the seat had been Liberal since it was created in 1885. At the 1918 general election, he easily won Yeovil in a three cornered contest, thanks to the Coalition coupon. Charles Waterhouse (1 July 1893 – 2 March 1975) was a British Conservative Party politician. Biography Born in Salford, the second surviving son of Thomas Crompton Waterhouse, of Lomberdale Hall, Bakewell, Derbyshire, he was educated at Cheltenham and at Trinity Hall, Cambridge, graduating with an MA degree in Economics in 1914. Waterhouse served in World War I in France with the 1st Life Guards. In 1917 he married Beryl Ford, and the couple had two sons and one daughter. He was unsuccessful parliamentary candidate in Derbyshire North-East at the 1922 General Election and 1923 General Election. He was elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Leicester South at the 1924 General Election, holding the seat until his defeat in 1945 General Election. Arthur Hope, 2nd Baron Rankeillour
Arthur Oswald James Hope, 2nd Baron Rankeillour (7 May 1897 – 26 May 1958) was a British politician, soldier and administrator. He was a Conservative and served as Member of Parliament for Nuneaton from 1924 to 1929 and for Birmingham Aston from 1931 to 1939, after which he was Governor of the Madras Presidency of British India from 1940 to 1946. Hope was born to the first Lord Rankeillour in 1897 and had his early education in England. He served with distinction in France during the First World War and entered public life soon after his military service was over. Hope married Grizel Gilmour (daughter of Brig.-Gen. Sir Robert Wolrige Gordon, 8th of Craigmillar and 13th of Liberton, 1st Bt. and Lady Susan Lygon) in 1919 and had four daughters. He died on 26 May 1958, nineteen days after his 61st birthday. Lambert Ward
Sir Albert Lambert Ward, 1st Baronet (7 November 1875 – 21 October 1956) was a volunteer soldier in the Territorial Army and a Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. Ward was an officer of the Honourable Artillery Company, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in 1902. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1904. He was still a lieutenant at the formation of the Territorial Army in 1908, and was promoted to captain in 1913. He fought in World War I, soon being promoted to temporary Major and ultimately rising to the (substantive) rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1916, he commanded the Howe Battalion of the Royal Naval Division. After the war he continued as an officer, initially reverting to the rank of major. He was awarded the Territorial Decoration TD in 1919. He was re-promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel in 1924 (re-gaining his former seniority), commanding the unit for a period up to 1928. Lieutenant-Colonel William Henry Kingsmill (1 December 1905 – 3 June 1971) was a British politician and businessman. He served as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Yeovil from 1945 to 1951.
