George Fisher Gilmour
George Fisher Gilmour (1904-1984) was a British artist, playwright, and filmmaker. As a genre painter, he worked primarily in oil and watercolor. Biography George Fisher Gilmour was born on April 12, 1904, in Kingston upon Thames to George Stratern Neilson Gilmour, a merchant mariner, and Catherine Darlington Fisher. His father's family migrated from Scotland to Liverpool where they became crewmen on merchant ships. His mother came from a family of lawyers and bankers. Gilmour's parents were married at St. Oswald Church in Chester, Cheshire on August 3, 1903. Gilmour was baptized at St. Luke's Church, Kingston. He spent his first years in Kingston upon Thames. The family moved to Gravesend in 1911. There the Gilmour family acquired two boarders, Jane Gleeson and her son, Denis. George, Catherine, Jane, and Denis moved back to Kingston shortly after World War I began. Kingston School Of Art
The Kingston School of Art (KSA) is an art school in Kingston upon Thames, part of Kingston University London. It was first established in 1899 as the Kingston School of Science and Art. In 1930 it was established as a separate school and has been based on its own art school campus since 1939. It was disestablished in 1970 by becoming part of Kingston Polytechnic, but a re-brand in 2017 introduced the name again. It is the oldest constituent part of Kingston University, which was established in 1992. The School of Art plays an important role in the cultural and social development of Kingston. War Artists' Advisory Committee
The War Artists Advisory Committee (WAAC), was a British government agency established within the Ministry of Information at the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and headed by Sir Kenneth Clark. Its aim was to compile a comprehensive artistic record of Britain throughout the war. This was achieved both by appointing official war artists, on full-time or temporary contracts and by acquiring artworks from other artists. When the committee was dissolved in December 1945 its collection consisted of 5,570 works of art produced by over four hundred artists. This collection was then distributed to museums and institutions in Britain and around the world, with over half of the collection, some 3,000 works, going to the Imperial War Museum. The New English Art Club (NEAC) was founded in London in 1885 as an alternative venue to the Royal Academy. It continues to hold an annual exhibition of paintings and drawings at the Mall Galleries in London, exhibiting works by both members and artists from Britain and abroad whose work has been selected from an annual open submission. History Young English artists returning from studying art in Paris mounted the first exhibition of the New English Art Club in April 1886. The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) is a British art body established in 1823 as the Society of British Artists, as an alternative to the Royal Academy. History The RBA commenced with twenty-seven members, and took until 1876 to reach fifty. Artists wishing to resign were required to give three months' notice and pay a fine of £100. The RBA's first two exhibitions were held in 1824, with one or two exhibitions held annually thereafter. The RBA currently has 115 elected members who participate in an annual exhibition currently held at the Mall Galleries in London. Auxiliary Fire Service
The Auxiliary Fire Service (AFS) was first formed in 1938 in Great Britain as part of the Civil Defence Service. Its role was to supplement the work of brigades at local level. The Auxiliary Fire Service and the local brigades were superseded in August 1941 by the National Fire Service. After the war the AFS was reformed alongside the Civil Defence Corps, forming part of the UK's planned emergency response to a nuclear attack. It was disbanded in the UK in 1968. Members of the AFS were unpaid part-time volunteers, but could be called up for whole-time paid service if necessary. James Anthony Betts
James Anthony Betts (1897–1980) was a British artist and arts professor. Early life Betts was born in Skipton, North Riding of Yorkshire. He began his education at the parish school of St Stephen's Church, Skipton a Catholic congregation. As an adult, Betts was employed by Midland Railway where he worked as a clerk. At night, however, he attended art classes led by Nellie Serena Flexen, a 1917 graduate of the Royal College of Art. With Flexen's encouragement, Betts sought further training at Bradford College. From Bradford, Betts was accepted at the Royal College of Art where he came under the influence and instruction of Paul Nash. While there, he developed friendships with fellow students Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, and Helen Binyon.
