George Ferris Mansion
The George Ferris Mansion in Rawlins, Wyoming is one of the most significant Queen Anne style buildings in Wyoming. Built during 1899–1903, the house's design was published by the Knoxville, Tennessee architectural firm of Barber and Klutz in an architectural pattern book. The house was built for George and Julia Ferris. George Ferris (d.1900) was born in Michigan. He moved to Wyoming and pursued a variety of vocations, including prospecting, ranching and game hunting, as well as election to the Wyoming Territorial Assembly and the Wyoming Constitutional Convention. Ferris' wealth came from the Rudefeha Mine (later the Ferris-Haggarty Mine) in the Grand Encampment copper mining district. Work on the house began in 1899, but George Ferris was killed in 1900 when he was thrown from a runaway carriage near his mine. Rawlins is a city in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 8,221 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Carbon County. It was named for Union General John Aaron Rawlins, who camped in the locality in 1867. Copper extraction refers to the methods used to obtain copper from its ores. The conversion of copper consists of a series of physical and electrochemical processes. Methods have evolved and vary with country depending on the ore source, local environmental regulations, and other factors.
