George Fergusson (diplomat)
George Duncan Raukawa Fergusson (born 30 September 1955) is a British diplomat. He was the British High Commissioner to New Zealand and Samoa, and the Governor of the Pitcairn Islands, from 2006 to 2010. He was the Governor of Bermuda from 2012 to 2016. Early life George Fergusson was born in 1955, the son of Baron Ballantrae, who was Governor-General of New Zealand 1962–1967. His middle name "Raukawa" is Māori and reflects the history of Fergussons being appointed to vice-regal posts in New Zealand (two Governors and two Governors-General; George Fergusson is a direct descendant of all four). He was educated at Eton College and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he edited the student newspaper ''The Tributary''. Political career Fergusson joined the Northern Ireland Office in 1978. George Fergusson, Lord Hermand
George Fergusson, Lord Hermand (25 August 1743–9 August 1827) was a Scottish advocate and judge. Life He was born on 25 August 1743, the eighth son of Jean Maitland, only child of James, viscount Maitland, and grand-daughter of John, fifth earl of Lauderdale, and her husband, Sir James Fergusson, 2nd Baronet of Kilkerran in Ayrshire. His elder brother was Sir Adam Fergusson, 3rd Baronet. George attended James Mundell's School in Edinburgh then the High School 1755–56. He then studied law at the University of Edinburgh. He was admitted a member of the Faculty of Advocates on 17 December 1765. He practised at the bar for 34 years with considerable success. In 1783, with his brother Adam and many other notable Edinburgh figures of the Scottish Enlightenment, he was a founder member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.
