George Faulkner
George Faulkner (c. 1703 – 30 August 1775) was one of the most important Irish publishers and booksellers. He forged a publishing relationship with Jonathan Swift and parlayed that fame into an extensive trade. He was also deeply involved with the argument over copyright infringement and piracy, both creating and fighting "Irish editions". Faulkner's year of birth, which is not certain, was probably 1703; his place of birth is unknown. He served his apprenticeship from 1717 to 1724 in Dublin, later setting up his own business. In the 1720s, while travelling frequently to London, he became a friend of the London printer, William Bowyer. In 1730, he suffered gangrene in one leg and had to have it amputated. It is known that he had a wife, the widow, Mary Taylor. Relationship with Swift Swift's usual printer during the 1720s was Benjamin Motte in London, but Faulkner published Swift's ''Drapier's Letters'' in 1725. George Faulkner (manufacturer)
George Faulkner (c. 1790 – 1862) was an English manufacturer who suggested and became involved in the creation of Owens College, the fore-runner of the Victoria University of Manchester. Biography Faulkner was born around 1790 in Oldham Street, Manchester, in which town his life was spent. In 1812 he entered into partnership in a well-established firm of silk, cotton, and linen manufacturers. For a time its business included a fine-spinning mill, in which Faulkner's intimate friend, John Owens, was one of his partners. At some date before Owens' death (1846), he is said to have informed Faulkner that he had made his will, in which he had left all his property to his friend. Faulkner, the story continues, refused point-blank to accept another fortune in addition to his own. George Everett Faulkner (January 31, 1855 – May 2, 1931) was a Canadian businessman, accountant and politician from the province of Nova Scotia. He served as a member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, including as Speaker of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly and a member of cabinet in the George Henry Murray government. Early life Faulkner was born January 31, 1855, in Folly Village, Glenholme, Nova Scotia to Thomas Faulkner and Arabella Morrison. Faulkner began working for the Dun, Wiman and Company in 1876, and started his own business Faulkner and Company in the 1890s. Political life Faulkner served as an alderman on Halifax Council from 1896–1901. George Aubrey Faulkner (17 December 1881 – 10 September 1930) was a South African cricketer who played 25 Test cricket, Test matches for South Africa national cricket team, South Africa and fought in both the Second Boer War and World War I. In cricket, he was an all-rounder who was among the best batsmen in the world at his peak and was one of the first leg spin bowlers to use the googly. Faulkner played Test cricket for South Africa from 1906 to 1912. His greatest achievements as a Test cricketer included taking six wickets in eleven overs against England and the first-ever Century (cricket), double century by a South African.
