George Elder (educator)
George Elder (11 August 1793 in Hardin's Creek, Kentucky 28 September 1838 in Bardstown, Kentucky) was a pioneer Roman Catholic educator. Life His parents, James Elder and Ann Richards, natives of Maryland, moved shortly after their marriage to Hardin's Creek, in the present Marion County, Kentucky, where George, the second of their seven children was born. The Elders were Catholics, and George's early education devolved mainly upon his father. George Elder in his sixteenth year entered Mount St. Mary's College in Emmitsburg, Maryland, to pursue classical studies. Here, he became the friend of William Byrne, afterwards founder of St. Mary's College, Kentucky, in George Elder's hometown. Both studied theology in St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, and were ordained priests at Bardstown by Bishop John David on September 18, 1819. George Elder (British Army Officer)
Major General Sir George Elder (died 3 December 1836) was a British Army officer who fought in the Napoleonic Wars, in the South American Expedition (1806–1807) and the Peninsular War. He was killed in an accident in Madras when he was thrown from his horse. Early life Elder, was born in Invernesshire. George Elder (baseball)
George Rezin Elder Jr. (March 10, 1921 – July 7, 2022) was an American professional baseball outfielder. He played one season in Major League Baseball, appearing in 41 games with the St. Louis Browns in 1949. Early life Elder was born in Lebanon, Kentucky, in March 1921, the youngest of four children of George Rezin Elder (1872–1957) and Mary Ellen "Lilly" Elder (1873–1922). His mother died when George Jr. was one; the family moved to Louisville, Kentucky, in the 1920s, then a few years later to Chicago and finally to Los Angeles. He served as a Marine artilleryman in the Pacific theatre, including in the Battle of Iwo Jima. Elder was a running back for the Fordham University football team. He considered attending the University of Notre Dame, where his brother Jack had been a running back. George Elder Davie
George Elder Davie (18 March 1912 – 20 March 2007) was a prominent Scottish philosopher whose well-received book, '' The Democratic Intellect'' (1961), concerns the treatment of philosophy in 19th century Scottish universities. Life He was born at no. 4 Baxter Park Terrace, Dundee on 18 March 1912. His father, George Myles Davie was a pharmacist and chemistry teacher, and his mother was Isabella Calder Elder. He married Elspeth Mary Dryer, an art teacher, on 5 October 1944 at Bonnyrigg Church in Midlothian. Elspeth Davie later became a respected writer and was awarded the Katherine Mansfield Prize in 1978. They had one daughter with whom he resided at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire at the time of his death on 20 March 2007.
