George E. Morrison Lecture
The George Ernest Morrison Lecture in Ethnology is given annually at the Australian National University in honour of George Ernest Morrison. The Lectures, founded by the Chinese community in Australia "to honour for all time the great Australian who rendered valuable service to China" were also, in the words of Geremie Barmé "related to Chinese-Australian resistance to White Australia policy, reflecting also the alarm and outrage resulting from the Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931." The Australian National University (ANU) is a public research university located in Canberra, the capital of Australia. Hans Bielenstein
Hans Henrik August Bielenstein (8 April 1920 − 8 March 2015) was a Swedish sinologist and Dean Lung Professor Emeritus from Columbia University specialising in the history of the Han Dynasty. Life Hans Henrik August Bielenstein was born on 8 April 1920 in Stockholm, Sweden. He attended private school in Stockholm and took the matriculation exam in 1939. After the outbreak of the Winter War, 1939–40, he joined the Swedish Voluntary Corps as a commando and fought the Russians in Finnish Lapland. After his return, he entered the Guards Regiment. In 1945, he decided to devote himself to Chinese studies and took a Ph.D. in Sinology at the Stockholm University. He studied history and oriental studies under the tutelage of the renowned Bernhard Karlgren. He earned his master's degree in 1945 and his licentiate in 1947. Eugene Kamenka
Eugene Kamenka (4 March 1928 – 19 January 1994) was an Australian political philosopher and Marxist scholar. Biography Kamenka was born in Cologne in 1928 and migrated to Australia with his parents in 1937. He was educated at the Sydney Technical High School, and after interrupting his studies went to Jerusalem where he married his first wife Miriam Mizrachi and with her encouragement he returned to Sydney University to complete his degree and begin work on his later published thesis "The Ethical Foundations of Marxism" for the Australian national university, publ 1962. Professor John Anderson of Sydney University was a key influence in his early career. Igor De Rachewiltz
Igor de Rachewiltz (April 11, 1929 – July 30, 2016) was an Italian historian and philologist specializing in Mongol studies. Igor de Rachewiltz was born in Rome, the son of Bruno Guido and Antonina Perosio, and brother of Boris de Rachewiltz. The de Rachewiltz family was of noble roots. His grandmother was a Tatar from Kazan in central Russia who claimed lineage from the Golden Horde. In 1947, he read Michael Prawdin's book ''Tschingis-Chan und seine Erben'' (Genghis Khan and his Heritage) and became interested in learning the Mongolian language. He graduated with a law degree from a university in Rome and pursued Oriental studies in Naples. In the early 1950s, de Rachewiltz went to Australia on scholarship. Karl August Wittfogel
Karl August Wittfogel (6 September 1896 – 25 May 1988) was a German-American playwright, historian, and sinologist. He was originally a Marxist and an active member of the Communist Party of Germany, but after the Second World War, he was an equally-fierce anticommunist. Life and career Karl August Wittfogel was born 6 September 1896 at Woltersdorf, in Lüchow, Province of Hanover to a Lutheran schoolteacher. Wittfogel left school in 1914. He studied philosophy, history, sociology, geography at Leipzig University and also in Munich, Berlin and Rostock and in 1919 again in Berlin. From 1921 he studied sinology in Leipzig. John Frodsham
John David Frodsham (5 January 1930 – 5 May 2016) was a British-born Australian academic who held posts in various areas of literary studies in Iraq, Malaya, Tanzania, and Australia. After studies at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, he worked at the University of Baghdad before completing his doctorate at the Australian National University with a thesis on Xie Lingyun. He was elected to the Australian Academy of the Humanities in 1969. He became the Foundation Professor of English and Comparative Literature at Murdoch University as Foundation Dean of the School of Human Communication from 1973 to 1976. He conducted Murdoch courses incorporating Chinese culture and literature, and in public lectures about china and its culture. Wang Ling (historian)
Wang Ling (王鈴; 王铃), 1917 or 1918–1994) was a Chinese historian and sinologist. He was known for his collaboration with Joseph Needham on the history of science and technology in China. Biography Wang Ling was born in Nantong, China, and graduated in history from National Central University (Nanjing University), which had moved from Nanjing to Chongqing during the Sino-Japanese war. In 1943, while working as a junior researcher at the Academia Sinica's Institute of History and Philology in Lizhuang, Wang met Needham, a British biochemist who had been sent by the Royal Society and British Government to head the Sino-British Science Cooperation Office, whose mission was to assist the universities of China. Göran Malmqvist
Nils Göran David Malmqvist (6 June 1924 – 17 October 2019) was a Swedish linguist, literary historian, sinologist and translator. He was also a member of the Swedish Academy between 1985 and 2019. Biography Göran Malmqvist was born on 6 June 1924, in Jönköping, Sweden. Following introductory studies of Chinese under Sinologist Bernhard Karlgren at Stockholm University, Malmqvist studied in China in 1948–1950. Chen Chih-Mai
Chen Chih-Mai ( zh, 陳之邁) (1908–1978) was a Republic of China diplomat who served as ambassador to several countries. After graduating from Tsinghua University in 1928, he pursued further studies in the United States, ultimately receiving a Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1933. After returning to China, he taught at Tsinghua University, Peking University, Nankai University and several other universities. He served in the Ministry of Education and in the Executive Yuan during the war, and in 1944 was transferred to the Embassy of the Republic of China in the United States.
