George E. Brower
George E. Brower was an American jurist who was a justice of the New York Supreme Court, Kings County District Attorney, and a member of the New York State Athletic Commission. Early life Brower was born in Brooklyn. His father, George V. Brower was president of the Brooklyn parks commission before Brooklyn was consolidated into New York City. He graduated from Princeton University in 1898 and Yale Law School in 1901. After he was admitted to the bar, Brower joined his father and brother at the firm of Brower, Brower, & Brower. New York State Athletic Commission In 1923, Brower was appointed to the New York State Athletic Commission by Governor Al Smith. In 1924 he was elected chairman of the board. The Supreme Court of the State of New York is the trial-level court of general jurisdiction in the New York State Unified Court System. (Its Appellate Division is also the highest intermediate appellate court.) It is vested with unlimited civil and criminal jurisdiction, although in many counties outside New York City it acts primarily as a court of civil jurisdiction, with most criminal matters handled in County Court. Roslyn ( ) is a village in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, on the North Shore of Long Island, in New York, United States. It is the Greater Roslyn area's anchor community. The population was 2,770 at the 2010 census. History Roslyn was initially settled by colonists in the year 1643. It was originally called Hempstead Harbor, but its name was changed to Roslyn in 1844 due to postal confusion regarding all the other "Hempsteads" scattered about Long Island. The name "Roslyn" was selected as the new name, as its location in a valley reminded officials of Roslin, Scotland. Roslyn was incorporated as a village on January 11, 1932. Louis Buchalter, known as Louis Lepke or Lepke Buchalter, (February 6, 1897March 4, 1944) was an American mobster and head of the Mafia hit squad Murder, Inc., during the 1930s. Buchalter was one of the premier labor racketeers in New York City during that era. Charles Birger and Buchalter are the only American mob bosses to be executed after being convicted of murder. Edwin Markham
Edwin Markham (born Charles Edward Anson Markham; April 23, 1852 – March 7, 1940) was an American poet. From 1923 to 1931 he was Poet Laureate of Oregon. Life Edwin Markham was born in Oregon City, Oregon, and was the youngest of 10 children; his parents divorced shortly after his birth. At the age of four, he moved with his mother to Lagoon Valley in Solano County, California. He obtained a teaching certificate in 1870 from Pacific Methodist College in Vacaville. Markham then attended San Jose Normal School (now San Jose State University) as a member of the first graduating class (1872), and wrote the poem The Man with the Hoe. The house in which he wrote the poem was preserved and moved to the city's History Park, and now serves as a poetry center.
