George Dyer (poet)
George Dyer (1755–1841) was an English classicist, poet and editor. Life He was educated at Christ's Hospital, and attended Emmanuel College, Cambridge. He edited the ''Delphin Classics'', a 143-volume set of Latin works published by Abraham John Valpy at which task his editorial labors were so excessive as to induce near total blindness. He also wrote poetry, and authored a number of tracts on the plight of England's poor and on reform of the political system. Radical He shared many ideas with radical writers of the time. His doctrine of benevolence advised a moral obligation to the poor, during a time when the interest in the lower classes was subsiding. He influenced authors such as William Godwin, but also gave critical and moral support to Samuel Taylor Coleridge and William Wordsworth. George Dyer (politician)
George Dyer (August, 1802 - May 8, 1878) was an American physician and politician. Dyer was born in Windham, Connecticut, in August, 1802. He was the son of Benjamin Dyer, a druggist in Windham and the grandson of Eliphalet Dyer, a member of Congress from Connecticut and afterwards Chief Justice of the State. He began the study of medicine with Chester Hunt, of Windham, and after earning a degree from Yale Medical School in 1827 established himself in practice in Greenfield Hill, Connecticut. After not finding a good opening there he moved in about 1832 to Trumbull, Connecticut, where he continued in active medical practice for forty years. He was attacked about five years before his death with softening of the brain, and failed gradually in mental and physical strength. Francis Bacon (28 October 1909 – 28 April 1992) was an Irish-born British figurative painter known for his raw, unsettling imagery. Focusing on the human form, his subjects included Crucifixion of Jesus, crucifixions, portraits of popes, self-portraits, and portraits of close friends, with abstracted figures sometimes isolated in geometrical structures. Rejecting various classifications of his work, Bacon said he strove to render "the brutality of fact." He built up a reputation as one of the giants of contemporary art with his unique style. George Leland Dyer
George Leland Dyer (August 26, 1849 in Calais, Maine – April 2, 1914 in Winter Park, Florida) was an American naval commander and the Governor of U.S. territory of Guam. In 1870, he graduated from the United States Naval Academy with honors and began his career in the United States Navy. During his career, he commanded the (1898), the (1898–1901), the (1902–1903), and the (1903–1904). From 1904–1905, he served as Governor of Guam. In 1908, he was promoted to Commodore and retired that year. Dyer was the brother of inventor Leonard Dyer and father of composer Susan Hart Dyer. George Dyer Weaver (16 September 1908 – 7 May 1986) was a Liberal party member of the House of Commons of Canada. Born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, he was a metallurgical engineer by career. Weaver was born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He trained for his engineering career at the Royal Military College of Canada, then served in South Africa's army between 1942 and 1944. From there, he joined the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals until October 1945, serving as a lieutenant. He was first elected to Parliament at the Churchill riding in the 1949 general election after an unsuccessful campaign there in 1945. ''Three Studies for George Dyer'' is a small-format triptych painted by the Irish-born British artist Francis Bacon in 1964. It comprises three portraits of Bacon's lover George Dyer: from left to right, a three-quarter view, a right profile, and a face-on view. It was painted in the first half of 1964, within a year of Bacon first meeting Dyer in late 1963, and was based on photographs of Dyer taken by John Deakin. Bacon painted about 40 triptychs in this small format, with each portrait measuring . This is one of five of Dyer in the small format, the others completed in 1963, 1964 (on a pink ground), 1966 and 1969. Unlike the four other small-format Dyer triptychs, one of which was painted on a pink ground and the others on a dark ground, this version was painted on a light yellowish ground.
