George Cunningham (British Politician)
George Cunningham (10 June 1931 – 27 July 2018) was a British politician who is known for introducing an amendment to the 1979 Scottish devolution referendum that resulted in the devolution act being repealed even though a majority voted in favour. Early life Born in Dumfermline, Cunningham was educated at Dunfermline High School, Blackpool Grammar School and the University of Manchester. He worked for the Labour Party as its Commonwealth officer. Political career Cunningham contested Henley at the 1966 general election as the Labour candidate. He was first elected as Member of Parliament (MP) for Islington South West at the 1970 general election. After boundary changes, he was elected for Islington South and Finsbury at the February 1974 election. Cunningham strongly opposed Scottish devolution. George Cunningham (baseball)
George Harold Cunningham (July 13, 1894 – March 10, 1972) was an American baseball pitcher. He played professional baseball for 14 years, from 1914 to 1927, including parts of five seasons in Major League Baseball with the Detroit Tigers from 1916 to 1919 and in 1921. Cunningham appeared in 162 major league games, 123 as a pitcher, compiling a 16–25 win–loss record with a 3.13 earned run average (ERA). He also played for the Chattanooga Lookouts in 1915 and 1920 to 1927. Early years Cunningham was born in Sturgeon Lake, Minnesota, in 1894. Professional baseball Cunningham began his career in professional baseball in 1914 with Duluth White Sox of the Northern League. He appeared in 45 games for Duluth and compiled a 23–10 record. In 1915, Cunningham attended spring training with the Detroit Tigers, but was farmed out on April 2, 1915, to the Chattanooga Lookouts of the Southern Association. Sir George Cunningham (23 March 1888 – 8 December 1963) was a civil servant in British India who served as the Governor of the North-West Frontier Province. He was appointed to the post again by the Dominion of Pakistan, after its independence. He tacitly witnessed his provincial government launch a tribal invasion of Kashmir and then oversaw it under directions from Governor General Muhammad Ali Jinnah. In his early years Cunningham was a notable Rugby player, serving as the captain of the Scottish national team at rugby union. Civil service career Cunningham joined the Indian Civil Service in 1911 and was awarded an OBE in 1921, KCIE in 1935, and GCIE in 1945.
