George Coles (entrepreneur)
Sir George James "G.J" Coles, CBE (28 March 1885 – 4 December 1977) was an Australian entrepreneur. He was the founder of what was to become the Coles Group retail shopping empire, a large chain store group in Australia. Early life Born in Jung Jung, Victoria (now Jung, between Horsham and Murtoa) to shopkeeper George W. Jung, Victoria
Jung is a locality in the northern Wimmera region, north-west Victoria. It is 316 km north-west of Melbourne and 18 km north-east of Horsham. The name is derived from the Parish ''Jung Jung'', which comes from an Aboriginal expression of uncertain meaning. It was previously known as Taylor’s Creek, Green Hills and Jerro. Sir Arthur William "A.W." Coles (7 August 1892 – 14 June 1982) was a prominent Australian businessman and philanthropist, a son of St James, Victoria shopkeeper George W. Coles (died 1932). With his brothers George James "G.J." (1885–1977), Kenneth Frank "K.F." (1896 –1985), Edgar Barton "E.B." (1899–1981), and Norman Cameron "N.C." Coles (1907–1989), A. W. Coles founded Coles Variety Stores in the 1920s, which was to become Coles Group, one of the two largest supermarket chains in Australia. He served as Lord Mayor of Melbourne from 1938 to 1940. In 1940 he was elected to the federal parliament as an Independent from Henty. Division Of Wilmot
The Division of Wilmot was an Australian Electoral Division in the state of Tasmania. It was located in central Tasmania, and was named after Sir John Eardley-Wilmot, the sixth Lieutenant-Governor of Tasmania. At various times it included the towns of Deloraine, Beaconsfield, Devonport, Latrobe, and New Norfolk. The Division was proclaimed on 2 October 1903, when Tasmania was first divided into Divisions, and was first contested at the 1903 Federal election. At the electoral redistribution of 12 September 1984, it was abolished and replaced by the Division of Lyons, to jointly honour Joseph Lyons, the tenth Prime Minister of Australia, who held Wilmot at the federal level from 1929–1939 and at the state level from 1909 to 1929, and his wife Dame Enid Lyons, the first woman elected to the Australian House of Representatives in 1943 and subsequently the first female member of Cabinet (1949–51).
