George Cochrane Hazelton (actor And Playwright)
George Cochrane Hazelton (1868–1921) was an American actor and playwright. Hazelton was born January 20, 1868. He performed as an actor with Lawrence Barrett, Edwin Booth, and Helena Modjeska. His first attempt as a playwright was ''The Raven: The Love Story of Edgar Allan Poe'', which was later made into a film. His next play, ''Mistress Nell'', was written in 1900 and was a great success. His most well-known play was ''The Yellow Jacket'', which he co-authored in 1912 with Joseph Henry McAlpin Benrimo. ''The Yellow Jacket'' was performed around the world by a number of notable actors including Mr. and Mrs. Charles Coburn and Harpo Marx. Hazelton died in New York on June 24, 1921. Lawrence Barrett (April 4, 1838 – March 20, 1891) was an American stage actor. Biography A native of Paterson, New Jersey, Barrett was born in 1838 to Mary Agnes (née Read) Barrett and tailor Thomas Barrett, Irish immigrants who had settled in Paterson. Edwin Thomas Booth (November 13, 1833 – June 7, 1893) was an American actor who toured throughout the United States and the major capitals of Europe, performing Shakespearean plays. In 1869, he founded Booth's Theatre in New York. Some theatrical historians consider him the greatest American actor, and the greatest Prince Hamlet, of the 19th century. Helena Modrzejewska (; born Jadwiga Benda; 12 October 1840 – 8 April 1909), known professionally as Helena Modjeska, was a Polish actress who specialized in Shakespearean and tragic roles. She was successful first on the Polish stage. After emigrating to the United States (and despite her poor command of English), she also succeeded on stage in America and London. ''The Raven'' is a stylized silent 1915 American biographical film of Edgar Allan Poe starring Henry B. Walthall as Poe. The film was written and directed by Charles Brabin from a 1904 play and 1909 novel by George C. Hazelton. Plot The film begins by tracing Poe's ancestral heritage before Poe himself is born. After the loss of his parents, Poe is taken in by the John and Francis Allan in Richmond, Virginia. The film then jumps ahead about 15 years to Poe's time at the University of Virginia. Due to debts from playing cards and a growing interest in wine, Poe begins to have difficulties. He hallucinates that he has killed a man in a pistol duel. Poe meets Virginia and they spend a day together, riding a horse and sitting "beside the glassy pool of romance." Joseph Henry McAlpin Benrimo (1874-1942) was an American actor, playwright, and director. He often went by the name J. Harry Benrimo.
